I want last night to be erased from my memory.
It was horrible.
Horrific.
After a Week 1 loss where I saw the Philadelphia Eagles lose a close battle to Brett Favre and the Packers, I told myself, convinced myself, that it was just the Week 1 jitters that allowed them to let the season opener slip out of their fingers. Their defense was smothering, and although their offense and Donovan McNabb were rusty all night, I thought for sure they would improve on Monday night.
Wrong.
They looked horrible. The offense couldn’t find the end zone and their defense looked lost at times. And who else lost their lunch when they saw Brian Dawkins laying on the field face down? Don’t even get me started on McNabb. The guy couldn’t hit water if he fell out of boat (cliche police). I wouldn’t even be talking about his erractic throws if he had hit a wide open Kevin Curtis for what could have been the game tying score in the final minute. The man was wide open!
But the game shouldn’t even have been that close. If Jason Campbell had hit a streaking Santana Moss downfield, we’d be talking about how the Eagles got blown out, rather than just “another loss.”
So after this 20-12 letdown to the ‘Skins, they now sit at 0-2 and at the bottom of the standings. This does not look like a team that went deep into the playoffs last year. The Eagles have now lost 6 of their last 7 with McNabb under center. He better get it together. He’s had weeks now to get the rust out, and the rest of the team had better start making plays. Their receivers have to fight more to get open.
If they lose to Detroit next week I don’t know how I’ll react. Maybe letting Jeff Garcia go wasn’t such a good idea.
