Coaching Change: Mike D’Antoni to Coach Team USA?

    Team USA

Fans of basketball may be locked in on the NBA playoffs, but for USA Basketball Director Jerry Colangelo, it is never too early to start thinking about the next Olympics. Word on the street is he plans for New York Knicks coach Mike D’Antoni to take over Team USA if Mike Krzyzewski decides not to come back.

Coach K, who guided the US to gold in Beijing last year after the 2004 squad brought home the bronze, has said his status as coach for the next Olympics is yet to be determined and that he would be comfortable coming back in a different role. Krzyzewski has publicly stated before that while he loved his experience on the international stage, it did take a lot out of him.

The US players thrived under the 62-year-old Krzyzewki, but the transition to D’Antoni would probably be smooth considering he served as an assistant during the team’s time in China and is widely regarded as a players coach. He also has strong relationships with many of the players that would be in contention for one of the 12 final roster spots, such as 2008 gold medalists Lebron James and Kobe Bryant.

D’Antoni seems to be a great fit — the players love him and he has coached overseas before — but I remain skeptical over the potential move. For one, I wonder how well his “seven seconds or less offense” would work at the Olympic level. I’m also curious how well he can command the respect of the NBA’s best players. It is one thing for a player to like a coach. It is something else for a player to accept (and embrace) criticism from one. Coaching a team with that much talent is as much about managing egos and touches as it is drawing up X’s and O’s.

What do you think? Do you want coach K to return? If he doesn’t, who would you like to see roaming the sidelines?

Lets Play, “Name that Crazy, Olympic Champion?

    Michael Phelps

Oh, the tabloids. Who said they weren’t good for anything? Who said they couldn’t stimulate the brain?

Lets play a little game this morning. Page Six of The New York Post gave us some clues to a certain athlete who was a little self-destructive and had been experimenting with a little Mary Jane for the first time. Here’s what they had to say:

WHICH Olympic champion smoked pot for the first time recently at a Michigan hotel? The stoned athlete broke the TVs in his room, but later bought exact replicas so he could replace them before anybody at the hotel was the wiser . . .

Hmm…An Olympic champion who has the type of money to buy TVs on a moments notice…Hmm…Would be in Michigan for no apparent reason at all….Hmm…Experimenting for the first time because he MIGHT have spent his entire teenage years trying to wipe that chlorine smell off of him.

Hmm….Does anyone know if Kobe swims, cause I can’t figure this out.

    WCSN Acquired by NBC

NBC Universal has aquired the World Championship Sports Network & their online site which will now be called “Universal Sports”.  The online site covers year-round competitions so NBC will be able to boast having 24/7 sports coverage year-round through this partnership.

                             Swimming Olympics

I think this is pretty cool because we don’t always get to see full coverage of the random yet interesting sports like the trampoline competition & table tennis in the summer, or curling in the winter. I hadn’t really tried to find out where to see this coverage, but now that I know it’s easily accessible online I’ll probably watch just for fun.

                                Volleyball

You can watch some of the trails for the 2008 Olympics this Thursday & Friday at UniversalSports.com.  I hope eventually “Universal Sports” will have extensive coverage because they were able to use NBC’s name to boost their audience.

Protesters Rally Against Torch. Paris Cops Put out Olympic Torch

Apparently there are a group of protestors in Paris that don’t support the Olympics in Beijing China.Protestors try to extinguish torch in Paris, France

Protesters in Paris, France forced authorities to extinguish the Olympic torch five times throughout the day, cancelling the final leg of the Olympic torch run. The reason for the activists strong protest and their attempts to extinguish the Olympic flame was to show their anger towards the human rights record in China.

The last time the Olympic torch was put out was when the torch came to Panathinaiko Stadium, the stadium of the 2004 Olympics, and it was blown out by high winds. And before then, the torch was extinguished in Montreal, Canada for the 1976 Summer Olympics after a heavy rainstorm.

Marion Jones Stripped of Medals, Banned from Beijing

    Cheaters never win.

Well, in Marion Jones’ case she did, but today the IOC formally took away her three gold medals and two bronze that she had one at the Sydney games.

Although Jones had already returned her medals willingly on her own after she admitted cheating, the IOC also has banned her from the Beijing games. This is in addition to them having already cleared her results dating back to 2000, which included her seventh place finish in Athens.

Poor Marion. Just in case you missed it the first time I posted it, here’s a message for you from Zach and the gang at Bayside High.
