    Fantasy Football Friday

As we approach the halfway point of the fantasy football season, the importance of winning each week seems to be magnified tenfold. This is especially true for teams that would not be in the playoffs if they were to start today. For those on the outside looking in it is easy to fall into a panic, but regardless of your current record and roster predicaments there is still time to turn it around.

Even if the future looks bleak because Matt Forte, Tony Romo, and the once mighty Steve Smith (Carolina version) have all disappointed your team thus far, there is still value on the waiver wire that can help you get a win this week. None of these guys are going to carry your team to victory like Tom Brady and his six touchdowns did last week, but they are good bye week replacements that could potentially become serviceable starters.

QB Matt Cassel (Owned in 78.5 percent of ESPN leagues): He laid a big goose egg in week one against the Baltimore Ravens but has been surprisingly dependable since. Cassel has scored double digit fantasy points in four of his last five games and finally seems to be clicking with wide receiver Dwayne Bowe. He also has the fortune of playing at home against the San Diego Chargers, which allowed 18 fantasy points to the less than prolific Kyle Orton and 21 points to Ben Roethlisberger and the suddenly pass-happy Pittsburgh Steelers.

RB Mike Bell (Owned in 49.7 percent of ESPN leagues): Conventional wisdom says to sit Bell because he is going against one of the best run defenses in the NFL in the Miami Dolphins. To that I respond — there are six teams on their bye week and sometimes you have to take risks. Look, while Bell has split time with Pierre Thomas he also has become the go-to guy on the goal line. Goal line carries lead to rushing touchdowns and the Dolphins allowed two of those last week against the New York Jets.

WR Hakeem Nicks (Owned in 25.1 percent of ESPN leagues): Of the big three wide receivers on the New York Giants, do you know which is the only one to post double digit fantasy points the last three weeks? You may be surprised to learn that it is Nicks, who has quietly been flying under the radar due to the emergence of the new Steve Smith and the endless hype of Mario Manningham. Look for Nicks to extend his streak to four games as the G-Men face the Arizona Cardinals, who have given up the 7th most fantasy points to opposing wide receivers this season.

Any defense that is not the Tennessee Titans: If you would have told me before the season that the Titans would be the worst ranked fantasy defense in the NFL, I simply wouldn’t have believed you. Yet, six weeks and three negative scoring games later that is exactly where we stand. Somehow the Titans are still owned in a mind boggling 50.4 percent of leagues, but with this being their bye week it is the perfect time for all you hanger-oners to let go of the past. A few interesting defenses to consider that are widely available — the New England Patriots (11th ranked defense), Cincinnati Bengals (13th ranked defense), and Indianapolis Colts (16th ranked defense).

    Fantasy Football: Breakout Receivers

Posted July 17, 2009 by darren

It might seem a little early to be talking fantasy football since training camps have not been started yet, but the NFL season is fast approaching and drafts are already getting started.  One of the most important things to think about when drafting is breakout candidates.  These are players that maybe have had some good seasons and now everything is in place for them to become a fantasy star.  Other breakout players have done little or nothing to this point but are in a situation this coming season to be productive.  Either way these are players that you should keep an eye out for when drafting because they could be the difference in you winning the league.

    Dwayne Bowe, WR, Kansas City
Yes he has been a productive fantasy receiver since he got in the league, but this year he could join the elite.  Bowe has put up good numbers no matter what QB is throwing to him, and now he is going to finally have a legit QB in Matt Cassel.  Even better for Bowe this season is the coaching change with Todd Haley taking over.  Remember he was the offensive coordinator for the Cardinals and made stars out of Larry Fitzgerald and Anquan Boldin.  I see a similar rise out of the just as talented Bowe this season.  He could easily get to 100 catches and double digit TD’s with Tony Gonzalez gone and him being the best option now.

    Steve Breaston, WR, Arizona
Even if Anquan Boldin stays, which looks like is going to happen, Breaston is still a good fantasy option in the Cards offense. I mean you cant double team all of these guys and Breaston is probably going to be the receiver they are least concerned with. This is money for him, as he will see one-on-one coverage all season against the third best corner. If Boldin is gone than Breaston easily becomes the starter and his numbers will explode. Look to get him later in the draft with the potential to become a breakout hit.

    Ted Ginn Jr., WR, Miami
People had been tabbing Ginn as a breakout candidate last year and nothing happened.  He showed some signs, but was very inconsistent.  This year could be his year, as reports are that he has looked good and confident in the off-season.  This year Ginn could just focus on being a receiver as coaches said he will be a backup returner.  It doesn’t look like he’ll ever score enough to be a star, but he could be very productive in catches and yards.  I think that this is the season he becomes that receiving threat.

    Steve Smith, WR, New York
When you lose your best receiver some one has to step up.  Smith is easily going to be Eli’s most experienced target at the position.  The only problem is that he is more of a slot receiver.  Still, I think Eli will be looking a lot for Smith on third downs and when he needs a play.  In a point-per-reception league he will be money given all the opportunities.  In other formats his value will go down a bit because of his low number of TD’s.

Top Ten Things to Look Forward to this NFL Season

Posted August 5, 2008 by david carrillo

The NFL season has officially begun. Let’s all take a moment and rejoice in this joyous occasion.

Being a complete sucker for sports history, I watched the Hall of Fame induction and imagined what it would be like to cry in front of a group of my peers and a national TV audience. I also caught most of the Redskins/Colts game and am on the verge of jumping onto the Colt Brennan bandwagon.

And although neither event was particularly memorable, watching them did get me even more excited about the upcoming season. Since I was so excited about football I decided to take a break from preparing for my fantasy football draft and came up with 10 reasons to be psyched for this year’s NFL season.Brett Favre

10] The Brett Favre watch – Everybody complains that they are tired of hearing about the latest will-he-or-won’t-he-play talk, but every time I speak to a NFL fan they always seem to know the freshest Favre information. Adding to the intrigue is the fact that both he and Packer’s management have treated the situation about as bad as they possible could.

Now we all begin each day wondering whether or not he will he start for the Packers this season; if Aaron Rodgers can ever mentally overcome the circus; how likely it is John Madden cries during Sunday Night Football if he sees Favre Play; and how ESPN will survive in the post-Favre era?

9] Watching this year’s “sleeper” team fail – I know it’s a little perverse, but I get sick of everyone jumping on a sleeper team every year. It has gotten to the point where it is just as bad to be the sheik sleeper team as it is to be on the cover of Madden; no one wants the curse.

Last year the media was talking about how the 49ers were a team to watch, and the moment they did, as a 49er fan I knew the season was doomed. This year the NFL community is hyping the Minnesota Vikings like crazy. Now we have to spend 16 weeks watching them not live up to expectations.

8] NFL Live – Really, is there anything more ridiculous than watching NFL Live in June? Over the summer we take a half-hour out of our day to hear why the Miami Dolphins cut their backup janitor. But once the season rolls around, NFL Live becomes as addicting as crack.

The show keeps us up to date on how every team in the NFL is doing and points us in the right direction for players to watch and players to forget. As an added bonus, hearing Ron “Jaws” Jaworski break down film makes us all wish we would have paid attention more while in school.David Tyree and Rodney Harrison

7] Seeing karma destroy the Patriots – Like most people who don’t live in Boston, I’m not a fan of the New England Cheaters Patriots. Although I dislike them for different reasons then most people (Bledsoe shouldn’t have lost his job to injury!), watching their perfect season swirl down the Super Bowl drain last year was beautiful.

Who would have ever thought that Eli Manning would go toe-to-toe with Tom Brady and come out on top? The Patriots look good again this year, but I have the feeling that their Spygate misdeeds will once again be punished by the football Gods.

6] Grown men beating each other senseless – If we were really honest about it we would say that one of the best things about the NFL is the big hits. Seeing a defensive end blindside a quarterback who stood a little too long in the pocket sends shivers down our spine and adrenaline throughout our body.

You could also add to the list: a running back trying to jump over the pile, a punt returner not waiving for a fair catch and getting laid out, and a wide receiver that was hung out to dry by his quarterback who makes him jump in the air over the middle.
