    Shaq vs. All

Shaq is going to be taking on top pro athletes at their own sport for a new reality show called “Shaq VS.”  According to USA Today, filming begins Wednesday in Pittsburgh, where Shaq takes on Steelers QB Ben Roethlisberger in football.  Other episodes will put him against Olympic swimmer Michael Phelps, retired boxer Oscar De La Hoya, slugger Albert Pujols, tennis pro Serena Williams and beach volleyball Olympians Misty May-Treanor and Kerri Walsh.

I don’t know what the producers or Shaq were thinking, since when is Shaq the greatest athlete in the world.  Shaq is long past his prime and even when he was could not compete in these sports.  Depending on how they set up the vs. matches I don’t see him winning any of these.  I mean Shaq playing baseball?  Are you serious?  The ball would be like a golf ball to his hands and I doubt he can hit anything over 70 mph.  Pujols would have to be blindfolded for him to even have a chance.  Now I think Shaq would be able to play football, but in this show he is going against a quarterback not a linemen like he should, meaning he is probably going to have to throw the ball.  Again, don’t see him beating a pro bowl QB in that unless there are rules helping him.  Shaq swimming against Phelps?  They better give him a big lead in a short race.  About the only sport I could see him winning on the show is beach volleyball.  I mean he towers over the net and can easily just spike the ball down or block them at the net.  I assuming here he gets a teammate.

Boxing is another one he should win just because of his size. If he did lose to De La Hoya, then he would lose all his credibility to fight, recently said he wanted to fight Brock Lesnar and Hong Man Choi in MMA.  Overall I might watch some episodes just to see how the setup of the show is.  I can see ABC throwing in plenty of rules so Shaq could actually compete with these athletes.  I mean they can’t just have him getting beat every week.  I guess we’ll just have to wait and see.

Fantasy Impact Player of the Week

It is still extremely early in the MLB season, but if votes were cast today for the Cy Young award there would be no doubt in which pitcher was most deserving of the hardware.  His stuff has been so dominant he is currently the No. 1 ranked fantasy player according to ESPN, ahead of such household names as Johan Santana and Albert Pujols.

The pitcher and this weeks fantasy impact player is none other than Zach Greinke of the Kansas City Royals.  Greinke’s hot start — he didn’t give up his first two earned runs of the year until his fifth start — has helped fantasy owners stay at the top of several pitching categories.

Greinke is first in the MLB in wins (5) and earned run average (0.50) in 36 innings of work.  His ability to eat up innings has made him and Boston’s Tim Wakefield the only pitchers to have tossed two complete games.  Greinke is also in the top 10 in strikeouts per nine innings, strikeout to walk ratio, and WHIP for pitchers who have logged at least 20 innings.

To put it in non-stat geek language; Greinke has been lights out.  And when you take into consideration his average draft position was 84.5 compared to Santana’s 9.1, he was one heck of a bargain for those owners who were smart/lucky enough to take him.

What Could Happen Today, Friday 13th

With today being one of the most superstitious days of the year, here are some freak events that we hope won’t, or maybe will, happen today.David Beckham

David Beckham: While flashing that boyish grin and walking down the red carpet at the Home Depot Center today, David Beckham’s debut is short lived. He is so focused on the cameras while he’s walking, that he trips on the carpet tearing his MCL, ACL and breaking a nail. Out for the year, fans riot the stadium for their money back.

Philadelphia Phillies: The Phillies come from behind today to beat the St. Louis Cardinals in extra innings to avoid team loss No. 10,000. The win sparks a 20 game-winning streak and the Phillies go on to win the World Series! Yeah, right. They’ll probably lose tonight.

Albert Pujols & Tony La Russa: Animosity boils over from the All-Star game. La Russa and Pujols throw down in the dugout after the skipper benches Pujols after he strikes out with the bases loaded in the seventh. When Pujols walks into the dugout, La Russa remarks, “that’s why I didn’t play you in the All-Star game.” The usually calm Pujols proceeds to fill the dugout full of uppercuts.
