That’s how many millions of people tuned into for Super Bowl XLII between the New York Giants and the New England Patriots yesterday.Tom Coughlin and Lawrence Tynes celebrate

It is the largest audience to tune into a Super Bowl, eclipsing the previous mark of 94.08 million viewers who watched the Dallas Cowboys take on the Pittsburgh Steelers in 1996.

The number is also the second largest audience to watch a television event, coming in second only to the series finale of M*A*S*H back in 1983, which had 106 million viewers.

Found in: MLB, Trivia

All good streaks are bound to end and that’s what happened with Brandon Webb’s last night.

The Arizona Diamondback pitcher’s scoreless inning streak ended Wednesday night at 42 innings when Prince Fielder singled home a run in the first inning.

The night still ended well for Webb as the reigning NL Cy Young winner got his sixth consecutive win after defeating the Milwaukee Brewers 3-2.

Webb, who started his streak July 20, gave up two runs in seven innings worked to improve to 14-8.

Beckham Doesn’t Sell-Out Stadium in Start

We got so caught up in David Beckham’s first ever goal for the LA Galaxy, that we didn’t even care to look into the stands.

But according to SportsByBrooks, they just happened to point out that the man that was supposed to bring life to American soccer couldn’t even sell out his home stadium on his first start of the year.

There were about 17,223 in attendance Wednesday night at the Home Depot Center that can seat up to 27,000. And to top that off, it was rumored that 8,000 of those tickets were given away for free.

Posted August 13, 2007 by nick
Found in: NFL, Trivia

I don’t know how they could come up with a formula for The 100 Greatest Quarterbacks of the Modern Era, but the guys down at the Arm Chair GM have figured one out.

They have every top quarterback of every decade in this list . From Johnny Unitas down to the not-so-dog-loving Michael Vick.

Check out the full list and see where your favorite quarterback ranks. I’m glad they showed Donovan McNabb (No. 39) a bit of respect. Despite his career being plagued by injuries the past few years, the guy has been efficient and hs one of the highest winning percentages of quarterbacks playing today.

The second time was the charm, as the New York Mets’ Tom Glavine pitched 6 1-3 inningsTom Glavine takes the mound for No. 300 to get career win No. 300.

Glavine became the 23rd pitcher in Major League Baseball history to join the 300-win club in the 8-3 victory over the Chicago Cubs.

The win was only his 57th in a Mets uniform, as the other 243 came when he was with the Atlanta Braves.

Phillies Lose their 10,000th game

Posted July 16, 2007 by nick
Found in: MLB, Trivia

Phillies lose No. 10,000As a loyal Philadelphia Phillies fan, it hurts me to write about this so-called milestone.

But the Phillies became the first team in sports history to lose 10,000 games Sunday night, when they dropped their latest to the St. Louis Cardinals, 10-2.

Their road to becoming the losingest team in sports history has spanned  a disappointing 125 seasons. Yes, there have been some good moments and a few championships, but there have been far more losing seasons and let downs.

If you’re a loyal Phillies fan, then you know that losing has become tradition in the City of Brotherly Love. For a time there, I thought the team took pride in the way they lost because they seem to do it in the most dramatic fashion.

Who could forget what happened the last time the Phillies went to the World Series in 1993. It was a pretty traumatic time for me as a 12-year-old fan. I was camped on my couch in front of my TV, with my Phillies cap and mitt hoping they could pull out a win. Then Joe Carter crushes the ball over the left field fence in the bottom of the ninth off Mitch Williams, giving the Toronto Blue Jays the title. The Phillies haven’t been back to the playoffs since and have been letting down their fans year in and year out.

But we have hope this year. They are staying in the playoff race and with their tradition of good performances after the All-Star break, maybe this year they can make it back to the playoffs.

That’s a big maybe though.

The fourth time is the charm for Roger Clemens.Roger Clemens

After losing his previous three starts after getting a victory in his season debut, the Rocket got win No. 350 last night. He became the first player, and eighth overall, to do so since Hall of Famer Warren Spahn reached the total back in 1963.

Clemens’ record now stands at 2-3 with the 5-1 win over the Minnesota Twins. He pitched eight innings and finished with four strikeouts.

The Fastest to Reach 100 Home Runs is…

Ryan Howard

And if you said Barry Bonds, you’re so wrong.

Nope, it’s Ryan Howard of the Philadelphia Phillies.

After his 505 ft blast last night against the Cincinnati Reds, the left hander reached the plateau after only his 325th game.

Ralph Kiner of the Pittsburgh Pirates held the previous record at 385 games.

To give you an idea how fast that is, Mark McGwire did it in 393 games and we all know how fast he hit them out. As for Bonds, he’s nowhere close.
