A day after the New York Yankees’ 2008 season has finally gotten underway; the Yankees have traded Alex Rodriguez to the Yomiuri Giants of the Japanese Baseball League.
This sent a shock wave through major league baseball, not only because of Rodriguez’s most recent contract signing, but also because the Yankees could have gotten so much more if they had traded him to teams such as the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim or the Florida Marlins last year for Miguel Cabrera.
“I’ve been heckled and berated by the fans all over this country for not being able to win the big one, it’s time to move on.” Rodriguez said. “I’m now going to the winningest team in Japanese baseball history. I know the pressure will be there also, but at least I won’t be able to understand what they are saying. Language barriers are great.”
What’s even more shocking is what the Yankees are getting in return.
The Giants offered to give up their number one prospect, 5’6 utility man, Ken Katsumoto and offered to take over the entirety of Rodriguez’s record contract. What that converts over to in Yen is beyond me, but it’s a lot.
Asked why Rodriguez decided to go to Japan instead of another Major League club, he replied, “I like sushi, and the way of the samurai.”
When his teammates were asked about the sudden trade, there was mixed emotions.
“I can cover the whole left side of the infield. I love doing my backhand, jump throws,” replied team captain Derek Jeter. “He’ll be missed, but I love doing those throws. Chicks dig backhands.”
New Yankee manager Joe Girardi was unavailable for comment, but rumor has it he has been at a local tavern since 10 a.m. drowning away his sorrows.
Oh and this just in: APRIL FOOLS!
