The Whole McNabb/Kolb Talk
I don’t think I’ve ever heard this much talk about a second round pick like this in quite some time.
I mean, before the NFL Draft, how many of you knew who Kevin Kolb was off the top of your head? How easily does he ring a bell?
Now, if you’ve been keeping up with all the NFL news lately, he’s in there practically everyday.
Kolb, the Eagles’ first pick in this year’s draft has been creating quite a stir lately, causing many to think that Donovan McNabb’s job in Philadelphia may be in jeopardy.
The Eagles traded out of the first round with the their nemesis, the Cowboys, and picked up Kolb with their first pick in the second round. Now many believed that the Eagles could have gotten him in the fourth round and picked up someone with more value at this pick, but Coach Andy Reid felt Kolb was the best player there. Period. End of story.
But why a quarterback? The Eagles recently signed A.J. Feely to an extension and acquired Kelly Holcombe in a trade from the Bills.
I think that they could have easily picked up other needs, such as a linebacker.
Personally, I don’t think that Kolb is that good to take McNabb’s job or the job from Feely. He’ll have to compete for the third string position. But its obvious that the Eagles are concerned with McNabb’s health, so they picked up a young quarterback to start grooming.
I don’t know much about Kolb. He comes from playing college in Houston and didn’t necessarily get the big time exposure like Brady Quinn or Jamarcus Russell.
But why Kolb? Why not John Beck? And what about Drew Stanton? Guys that were rated higher than him.
My guess is that Reed and the coaching staff see something, potential, in Kolb that many of the other scouts didn’t. I’m sure he can develop into a good starter someday, but I don’t see the Eagles handing him over the reigns with the competitive they have this year.
McNabb’s job is secure. For now. The rest is hoopla.
