How to Buy a Football
How to Buy a Football
If you’ve been to the sporting goods department lately, you might have noticed that
there are tons of different footballs sitting on the shelves these days. It shouldn’t be this hectic when all you want to do is buy a ball!
Well, to help you find the best one for you, here are some tips:
What are you using it for?
Knowing your intentions for the ball can help you save considerably when buying a football. There are tons of different options on the market from Nerf, foam football to leather ones.
If you’re just looking for something to throw around in the street and aren’t too worried about getting it scuffed up, pick up a cheap, foam ball. But if you’re looking to practice your throwing motion and get the feel of a competitive ball, pick up one of the lower end leather models. These tend to be much more durable and can withstand rough play and conditions.
How much are you willing to spend?
Depending on the ball you need, prices range can range considerably. Foam balls tend to be the cheapest while the NFL and NCAA leather ball models can get pretty expensive. There is a middle range though, with balls that are made out of rubber and synthetic rubber. They too come in mini-sizes and full size.
Size Does Matter
If you’re buying a ball to be used in league play or for a child, there are some sizes to choose from. Stores sell NFL, NCAA and high school regulation size footballs. Consult the league you play in if you want to know the exact dimensions so that you can become familiar with the size. They also have youth, juniors and adult sizes to help you select.
I have a suggestion though if you’re trying to get your child first acquainted with a ball. It might be best to get them a mini or a small ball to help them get their mechanics and throwing motion developed. As they get older and their hands get bigger, get them a bigger size.
Options
Today’s balls are more than leather and lace. They have all kinds of options on them now. From grooves in the ball for better grip to fins attached to the back for maximum flight. Foam balls seem to be the most affordable and have the most options on colors, accessories and sizes. So if you’re just looking for something to toss around for fun, I suggest you check out some Nerf balls or the lower end leather balls.
Even for the fan fanatic, there are commemorative balls representing their favorite pro team. Depending on the size and the material it is made out of, the prices of the balls will vary.
