    Comfy Comforters for Fall

Posted September 24, 2009 by colleen
    Found in: Bedding

As the weather gets brisker (I feel like I start every monologue this way now!) all I want to do is make my bed the perfect personal haven. I’ve got the memory foam, the jersey sheets, the extra pillows ranging in hardness and height and color-coordinated to match the sheets, the fuzzy blanket that I sleep with no matter how breathable or not breathable, it becomes in the summer, or insufficient in the winter. While the fuzzy blanket may have been just enough of a top layer for summertime (there were some nights where I was pushing it!) now that it’s fall and the weather is brisk, the fuzzy blanket built for comfort is not enough. I need shelter. Large, depth-defying comforters that can brave the cold and fit several small children in their bulbous pockets of fluffy goodness. Here are some of my top picks:

Down Comforter 1101: $39.99 for a twin size

    heartland comforter

Laura Comforter Twin: $134.99, marked down from $146.00

Milano White Goose Down Comforter: $156.99

    Shopping with India Hicks

Today’s Nytimes.com home and garden site showcases a shopping spree with India Hicks, the designer of a series of home and body products for Crabtree & Evelyn. While I am not a huge fan of the chalky, floral usual wares of Crabtree & Evelyn, India Hick’s inspiration comes from more tropical towns and products. Hicks picks out products with an organic feel and earthy touch, but bright colors and tropical designs. With such products as a pufferfish-etched dinner platter and a metal chandelier from Anthropologie, India has a style unto herself that we can only try to emulate.

    Here’s how!

By using Smarter.com’s comparison shopping engine, I was able to find similar products to India Hick’s designs that are more affordable! Check out some of them here:

    Muse Metal Chandelier: $565.00
    metal chandelier
Michael Kors Bali Queen Comforter: $299.99 (the price has been nearly cut in half!)

Young America by Stanley Surfer’s Chase Cloakroom Bookcase in Natural Cherry: $799.00

    Seasonal Highlight: Concert Going

Posted July 29, 2009 by colleen
    Found in: Outdoor Furniture

Summer is a fantastic time for outdoor entertainment: sporting events, concerts, outdoor theater, shakespeare on the green/ lawn/open spaces, etc. You want to be packed and prepared for the events, though, or else an event-filled afternoon at the local park may turn into a disgusting, sweaty, uncomfortable mess. Some points to keep in mind, when packing for an outdoor event in the summer:

    1. Check the weather!! If it’s going to rain, can you get shelter? Will an umbrella or tent suffice, or is it going to be so hazardous that the event isn’t worth it? Is it going to be over 100 degrees? Make sure you bring all the proper equipment, sunscreen, water bottles, coolers, snacks, etc.

    2. How long is the event/ what will parking and travel be like? Will you have to take a 2 hour car ride to NYC for the All Points West concert? Will you only have room in the trunk to pack? Think about the ratio of necessary equipment vs. time at the event/ traveling to the event total. You don’t need to pack for a marathon weekend if you’re only going down the block to see an outdoor movie projected on the side of the bank.

    3. Seating. Will it be provided? Will there be a lawn? Should you bring a blanket (so you don’t disrupt the view of your fellow audience?) or should you bring a chair to have a fantastic view, but irritate everyone around you?

Some necessities for every concert goer, outdoor eventer, or summer partier:

High Boy Beach Chair with Cupholder from EverywhereChair.com: Pair of chairs for $230.95
    everywhere chair

Supersize Primaloft Comforter on sale at The Company Store.com: $107.00 for twin size, $188.00 for extra-warm king size.

Better than a beach towel or sheet, a comforter actually gives some support and is thick enough to protect you from the moist ground.

    Coleman X-Treme Wheeled Cooler 62 Quart: $45.86

    Celebrity Spotlight: James Bond Decor

Posted June 26, 2009 by colleen
Found in: Design Concept, Decorating, Home Decor

Who doesn’t love the steamy sagas of James Bond?  The thrill, the style, the misogyny, the mystery, it’s all possibly to die for…another day.  Ha!  Joke, I enjoyed that.  What I also enjoy are the fashionable apartments and hotels that Mr. Bond frequents.  While often tricked out with microphones, femme fatales, or waiters and maids on a suicide mission.  But in all seriousness, the interior is always stylish and delectable.  Here are some of my favorites:

    1. The World is not Enough (1999)

Gold filigree, lavish textiles, Versailles blue, sheer curtains:  this is sumptuous style at its peak.  To emulate this style, first thing you need to look at is the walls.  You want to consider accent colors, like yellow or blue, that are regal and slightly muted and darkened in their color.  But not too dark, we’re not looking to recreate Gothic Victorianism.  It’s all about finding a luminous match for gold, which is the number one trickiest home decor color to use well.  Gold promotes elegance and reeks of status, but guests (and yourself) will immediately ask “is this really necessary?  The rest of the house is so post-modern, and then you get to the living room with the gold filigree around the door, gold-winged angel hunched over the ashtray, and gold tassels on the heavy blue curtains?  Who are these people and when did I go through the timewarp?”  Gold is beautiful in the most unlikely of places:  bed comforters, hands down, look beautiful in gold.  I love EgyptianPeddler.com’s 7-piece Bed-in-a-Bag Diamond Gold Comforter Set ($99.99).  Complete with a comforter, 2 pillow shams, 2 square cushions, 1 neck pillow and 1 pleat, this deal is featured at Smarter.com’s comparison shopping at the remarkable deal price of only $99!  Available in king, queen, or full, this is a bed set fit for a goddess, and is not too gaudy or rash in its coloring.  It’s very warm, but not too bright, and is made of some if the finest materials.

    2. Quantum of Solace, Bedroom Scene (2008)

Freshest on my mind at least, the most recent Bond movie has remarkable architecture and scenery as well.  The opera scene still sends shivers down my spine.  But don’t forget about the leading (and second-tier) women of the film, who are just as remarkable as their predecessors.  Recently I attempted to cut my hair like the redhead in this photo, I think it turned out rather well (more reason to look to Bond for style advice in every lifestyle choice!).  What I want to point out about this photo is the beautifully crafted dark wood in the room:  the modernist bed frame, the window screens, the lamps and wall paneling.  While dark wall painting is rarely a good thing unless you’re setting up a photography darkroom, dark wood on the walls is absolutely beautiful, natural and elegant.  I am absolutely turned on by the bed frame:  check out the sultry equivalent created by William and Sonoma, called the Wood Bed Frame, Cal King, Cocoa Stain.  Boasting handcrafted solid hardwood and maple veneer, this high-backed bed is absolutely divine.  For $795, it is slightly pricey, but totally worth the investment.

Low Priced Bedding - Discount Bed-in-a-Bag It’s not a shocker or a new revelation but it never ceases to amaze me how much guys depend on women to make their homes more comfortable.

It’s like they would never take the time to cushion their nest, but I have yet to meet a man who didn’t miss it when they break up with their girlfriend and all of a sudden the scented candles disappear, the laundry piles up and the general sweet smell starts to disappear. Leaving behind the stale stench of chips and beer.

Case in point, let’s take my brother Jeff, the last time I went to his house he had a girlfriend and the place was remotely clean, sweet smelling and generally comfortable. Now there is literally a drum set in the living room, it smells musty, and his bed is a hodgepodge of non-matching sheets. Yuck.

I am going to get him a bed-in-a-bag comforter set for Christmas. It’s necessary at this point.

I found a great deal on this 7 piece Jacquard Comforter Bed-in-a-Bag set!

Warm up in Style with a Gold-Beaded Throw

Shop NBC Shop for a Gold Beaded Throw - Bedding

I haven’t  been feeling too well, I can’t seem to get any energy. I had so many things planned yesterday but the moment my bum hit the sofa, I ended up falling asleep. Yet it was not a restful sleep, I woke up repeatedly because I was cold. However I was too drained and lazy to go to my bedroom and grab a comforter. Pathetic right?

When I am out I occasionally see a comfortable looking throw for my sofa, however I tend to be very particular about such things. I want my throw to be warming and comfortable, yet aesthetically pleasing to the rest of my living room decorum.

I think I found the perfect solution for my dilemma. This beaded throw is an amazing way to add a pop of color to any home. It features gold-tone beading done by hand that will brighten up the look and feel of any space. It’s perfect for accenting a sofa, chair, table or the end of a bed. You can even hang it on the wall to display the beautiful beading. This throw also makes a wonderful gift!

Choose from three irresistible colors - rich plum, deep turquoise or creamy tan.

Gold-Beaded Throw - Turquoise - Low Priced Bedding

I personally like the turquoise shade best, it matches my stuff nicely. :)

    Price $107.50
