Funny Door Mats to Greet Your Visitors

As hard as I try, with a family of five (most of which are young boys) and two hairy, yappy Chihuahuas, my house is never as clean as I wish it to be. Every family man or woman knows, nothing inspires kids and pets to knock over a ficus tree or grace the kitchen floor with a squeeze bottle’s worth of ketchup, like a freshly cleaned home.

Rather than make an excuse when someone unexpectedly knocks on the door, I’ve decided to warn guests they’re entering at their own risk with a “Beware of Children” doormat. It lightens the mood and lets the unsuspecting know this is a house that’s lived and laughed in. They’re welcome to join the insanity or run away, hands flailing madly, screaming their refusals to enter. The decision’s all theirs.

Welcome Mats: Protect Your Home From Frosty Weather

When it’s seasonably warm, on days like today, it’s hard to guess the best way to handle the weather. How do you protect your home from both the frosty winter weather, and from the slush, wet boots and puddles of the random warm days like today?

You need to have some way to manage the extra bulk of clothing: best way, a mud room or designated entrance, maybe through the basement or the back door. You’ll need a drying rack too, or a space to hang up all of the wet clothing away from the dry clothing, so the former doesn’t wreck the latter. But what about the first step? That first step going in the door, you want to try to dry off your boots before that.

I recommend buying a welcome mat or door mat–it’s fun and comforting, welcomes you guests but also reminds them to clean off their boots before they enter your home. So long as the snow or ice isn’t covering up the welcome mat, you’re in business!

Truth is when I first heard of “leather” shag rugs my first instinct was to cringe a bit. I don’t know why but I immediately got a vision of a hairy bo-hunk with a disco shirt open to the naval, boppin his head and spewing cheesey pick up lines! Ha!
