It’s time to start stocking up for the annual Turkey Feast! To do that, you’re going to need all of the fixings, turkey, cranberry sauce, stuffed potatoes and pumpkin pie. Delicious! It’s time to prepare for the feast of the year, and that includes prepping the furniture, table, and dinnerware for all of the invited guests. Seasonal Highlight: The Yankee Candle Craze

Posted October 27, 2009 by colleen
    Found in: Candles, Home Decor

I remember my mom loving the Yankee Candle collection when I was little, and now that I think of it she still does to this day. For every holiday I come home, there is a different festive smell that wafts through the air, and it’s not always her cooking. Sometimes it smells like Christmas trees even though the tree is still setting outside, sometimes it’s the constant smell of gingerbread or pumpkin bread that makes you start to salivate even in your dreams. The Yankee Candle Collection is relatively inexpensive for the powerful and long-lasting smell you get. Buy some candles today to make your home smell even brighter! It’s like coffee for the nose on an early morning, and comfort food for the nose on a lazy Saturday afternoon.

Some top Yankee Candle Products for fall:

Housewarmer Be Thankful Yankee Candle Collection from BedBath and Beyond.com is the Yankee Candle smell of the month! Ranging from $6-$15 depending on the size.

Go Green: Paint with the Environment in Mind

Personally, I am a big fan of the shamrock green color (the little Irish girl in me), and I especially love thinking about painting my newest furniture, walls and fresh exterior walls with some green-spirited, eco-friendly paints. Check out Ecospaints.com for an entire list of organic, odorless solvent products that won’t ruin your health or the health of Mother Nature. We’ve all heard the scares of lead paint and small children and animals, so before we find out the next harmful chemical that’s ruining our atmosphere and children’s health in our very homes, let’s be preemptive and use only eco-friendly paints that have less chemicals in them, in general, than the standard can of paint.

Top picks of eco-friendly paints for fall:

Eco-Friendly Feng Shui wall paint (1 liter): 15.65 pounds (Ecospaints.com is a British store)

Stone and Tile Sealer (1 liter): 15.65 pounds

    Decorative Wall Clocks

Everything we ever want in life is time–time to work, time to sleep, time to dream, time to relax, time to exercise, time to change, time to stay the same. As the summer is rapidly rushing towards the finish, I like to think about what I can do to slow the time down, or speed it up, depending on how I’m feeling a particularly day. Today, for example, l want the time to slooooow down. A lot. And the only way I can think to physically change that would be to get a clock–and then slow down the time.

Smarter.com can help you jump ahead (or slow down the time) with it’s selection of beautiful wall clocks. Here are some of our top picks:

Time Zones Hanging Wall Clock Set 06909: $294.11

    Kashmir Wall Clock: $857.50

    Uttermost Brina Clock: $288.00

    Celebrity Spotlight: James Bond Decor

Posted June 26, 2009 by colleen
Found in: Design Concept, Decorating, Home Decor

Who doesn’t love the steamy sagas of James Bond?  The thrill, the style, the misogyny, the mystery, it’s all possibly to die for…another day.  Ha!  Joke, I enjoyed that.  What I also enjoy are the fashionable apartments and hotels that Mr. Bond frequents.  While often tricked out with microphones, femme fatales, or waiters and maids on a suicide mission.  But in all seriousness, the interior is always stylish and delectable.  Here are some of my favorites:

    1. The World is not Enough (1999)

Gold filigree, lavish textiles, Versailles blue, sheer curtains:  this is sumptuous style at its peak.  To emulate this style, first thing you need to look at is the walls.  You want to consider accent colors, like yellow or blue, that are regal and slightly muted and darkened in their color.  But not too dark, we’re not looking to recreate Gothic Victorianism.  It’s all about finding a luminous match for gold, which is the number one trickiest home decor color to use well.  Gold promotes elegance and reeks of status, but guests (and yourself) will immediately ask “is this really necessary?  The rest of the house is so post-modern, and then you get to the living room with the gold filigree around the door, gold-winged angel hunched over the ashtray, and gold tassels on the heavy blue curtains?  Who are these people and when did I go through the timewarp?”  Gold is beautiful in the most unlikely of places:  bed comforters, hands down, look beautiful in gold.  I love EgyptianPeddler.com’s 7-piece Bed-in-a-Bag Diamond Gold Comforter Set ($99.99).  Complete with a comforter, 2 pillow shams, 2 square cushions, 1 neck pillow and 1 pleat, this deal is featured at Smarter.com’s comparison shopping at the remarkable deal price of only $99!  Available in king, queen, or full, this is a bed set fit for a goddess, and is not too gaudy or rash in its coloring.  It’s very warm, but not too bright, and is made of some if the finest materials.

    2. Quantum of Solace, Bedroom Scene (2008)

Freshest on my mind at least, the most recent Bond movie has remarkable architecture and scenery as well.  The opera scene still sends shivers down my spine.  But don’t forget about the leading (and second-tier) women of the film, who are just as remarkable as their predecessors.  Recently I attempted to cut my hair like the redhead in this photo, I think it turned out rather well (more reason to look to Bond for style advice in every lifestyle choice!).  What I want to point out about this photo is the beautifully crafted dark wood in the room:  the modernist bed frame, the window screens, the lamps and wall paneling.  While dark wall painting is rarely a good thing unless you’re setting up a photography darkroom, dark wood on the walls is absolutely beautiful, natural and elegant.  I am absolutely turned on by the bed frame:  check out the sultry equivalent created by William and Sonoma, called the Wood Bed Frame, Cal King, Cocoa Stain.  Boasting handcrafted solid hardwood and maple veneer, this high-backed bed is absolutely divine.  For $795, it is slightly pricey, but totally worth the investment.

    Designer Profile: Fashion as Inspiration

I subscribe to the belief, personally, that your home should reflect your personal style, not the other way around.  Your personal style developed (hopefully!) way before you bought your first apartment or house that you now call “home”.  I’m not talking about the dingy apartment you had to scrape through those first few years after college, I’m talking about home, when you actually had enough money to pick what you wanted, not what was cheapest.  I was struck by how fashion relates to interior design in the most recent issue of Vogue.  For one, I absolutely love Cameron Diaz, the feature woman and style icon of this month’s Vogue, but I was thoroughly distracted by her scenic location.  Only in a way California seems to be able to pull off, the house seemed built of light and sunshine.

Diaz’s style is enviable summer fashion:  well-made, thick linen and a leather belt, the perfect combination of chic and summer fun.  The decor in the room compliments this, with cream-colored, simply-lined chairs, a glass table and wooden dangle decorations.  Maybe your style is a little different, a little darker than Diaz’s bubbly blonde, and you would go with more of a vintage worn aesthetic.  For summer, though, simple and chic is key: here are some ways to evoke Vogue’s set:

    Beige Microfiber Adjustable Sofa: $562.99

Modish Glass Top End Table: $384.99.
