4 Tips To Plan and Prepare Your Spring Garden

As February ends, the mind’s of gardeners turn to planting and springtime; but is your garden ready to go? Often, winter has ended leaving a few days of 50 degrees per week, and that’s the perfect weather to start prepping the garden.

Make a Plan

Your first step is to make a plan for your planting whether it’s vegetables or flowers. You need to decide if you want to go with some of the old faithfuls or branch off with something different. Old faithfuls are guaranteed to do well, but may seem boring. New and exciting plants run the risk of not growing well. Make your choice carefully. I like to keep some staple flowers and veggies, yet mix in a few new varieties to see how they grow. If they grow well, then the next year I plant more of them.

Prep the Garden

If the weather is decent and the ground isn’t frozen, then you can begin prepping your garden. This includes going out and tilling your rows and picking out any rocks, branches, roots, etc. that may have developed since last year. This is also a great time to test your soil for acidity and nutrients. By doing this, you’ll know if you need to buy some nitrogen-rich soil or other additives.

Ask Your Questions

If you have any worries or questions about planting or gardening, then now is the time to ask that Master Gardener or floral shop attendant about them. Their lives get a lot busier when spring finally gets here, but they should have time now to answer your questions quickly. It’s also not a good idea to wait until the last minute or after your buy your products.

Buy Your Seeds

It’s too early to plant bulbs or potted plants, but if you plan on starting from seeds, now is the time to buy. Many shops, websites and magazines have sales going on to help bulk up winter sales, but when spring arrives those prices skyrocket. It’s simply the law of supply and demand. In winter, the demand is low and supply is high so it’s generally cheaper, as opposed to spring.

It’s an exciting time of year when the world recovers from the winter blahs and we can once again look forward to going out and enjoying the sunshine. It’s almost here and I can’t wait.
