When most people think of entertaining, they picture people quietly sitting around a living room, sipping wine. If things get a little crazy, there might be a rousing game of Euchre or Mahjong. As people get older, they think of entertaining as a sophisticated experience because that’s how it’s always portrayed.
In reality, entertaining is just about…entertaining. It doesn’t have to be somber unless you want it to be. Take, for example, parties surrounding sports events. You’re not going to see anyone sipping wine. People are going to be chugging beers and screaming their heads off.
Instead of pigs wrapped in blankets, it’s hot wings and hot dogs. Hosting a party involves whatever the host wants, even if it doesn’t revolve around an event. A few weeks ago a friend invited us over and, when we got there, it was a full-fledged party. Her house had about 15 people there and they were all playing Wii sports and eating a couple of pizzas ordered from the restaurant down the street.
We had a great time and she only spent about $30 for the pizzas and we actually paid for getting the drinks. It was reserved. It wasn’t rowdy. It was just a bunch of friends getting together to have a good time.
It always amazes me how the movies glamorize entertaining as some kind of elitist event. Everyone brings a chilled bottle of wine and they talk about brie and politics. This may be how some folks do things, but where I come from we like to actually have fun.
As a host, even the host of an impromptu party, what goes on is up to you. It’s important that you steer the direction of the party. If you don’t want to spend a lot of money on food and entertainment, then don’t. All that matters is that there is enough food and drink to keep people satisfied. The food should be complementary to the style of party, but that’s it.
The people are there because they want to socialize and be with their friends. If you feel the need to create some lavish event, then do it for you and not because of anyone’s expectations and approval.
