The kitchen isn’t the kind of room that guests see everyday, but it is one of the most used and functional rooms in the home. It’s where the meals are prepared, where the dishes are washed and where you go for those late night snack attacks.
People spend so much money on making it look homey by using wall paper, trim and fancy appliances, but there is also something to be said for space. Even I am guilty of overcrowding my kitchen countertop with small appliances and eliminating any sense of space. The whole room feels cluttered when there are too many items on the countertop.
It starts when you get that blender, and you swear you’ll be chopping vegetables and making milkshakes every day, but it sits there collecting dust instead. You can’t live without the coffee pot and you wouldn’t want to. You needed some tunes, so you brought in your old CD player and there wasn’t enough room for the pasta fork and spatula, so large utensils are now inside a vase next to the sink.
It started out innocent enough, but soon you didn’t even have enough room on the countertop to actually prepare meals. You end up moving to the dining room table or on top of the freezer. There is no need for this if you have a little extra cabinet space.
If you aren’t using the toaster or the blender at that exact second, then put them into a cabinet and out of sight. Unless you have the holy grail of toasters that is as much a work of art as it is a functioning toaster, then no one wants to see it. Free up the counter space to actually prepare and make food, and declutter your kitchen. Crowded countertops are the first thing a person will notice about your kitchen. You might as well have a giant painted sign that says “Hey, look at my crowded countertop and not at my expensive wall paper!”
Don’t be a victim of this decorating faux pax. Odds are you aren’t even thinking about it when you walk into the kitchen because you are either used to it or in denial. But I can guarantee that your mother-in-law will notice, and that’s never good.
