Grilled Cheese Sandwiches: Turning a Classic into Gourmet

When I was growing up, the grilled cheese sandwich was a staple around our house. It’s simple, quick, budget-friendly and scrumptious every time. The recipe for a grilled cheese sandwich is just about as easy as can be a slice of cheese, two slices of bread and some butter. Fry that bad boy up and you have yourself a delectable sandwich.

If you’re looking for something a little more special, there are variations or ingredients you can add to turn ordinary grilled cheese into a gourmet sandwich. When you’re feeling like keeping things simple but want a touch of added delish, try these variations on the classic grilled cheese sandwich.

Spice ‘Em Up

I love to add a sprinkle of garlic or some freshly ground pepper to my grilled cheese from time to time, especially if I’m using American cheese. Because the flavor of the traditional sandwich is so light, a little goes a long way, so you don’t add too many spices or they’ll overpower the sandwich.

Get Cheesy

Benching the everyday American cheese and experimenting with other types, like Mozzarella or Muenster, gives a you completely different flavor. If you’re feeling sassy, throw in a slice or two of pepperjack cheese and your sandwich will have a little extra kick.

Break New Bread

Rather than using your typical white or wheat, make your grilled cheese sandwich with a more flavorful bread like sourdough. It’s amazing how much the taste and texture of the sandwich changes when you stray from the traditional breads in your cupboard.

Love the Leftovers

Some may say that when you add meats or veggies, it’s no longer a grilled cheese sandwich, but I consider myself a rebel. I say the main event is the cheese and bread, so feel free to add away. Take a look around your fridge and see what you have left over from previous meals. Toss in some leftover taco meat, grilled chicken or slices of avocado and tomato. Classic to gourmet – and you didn’t have to break a sweat.

Everyone has times when they’re stomachs are growling but they’re pressed for time. Whipping up a grilled cheese sandwich takes only a few minutes, and when you add in these little extras, you can have a gourmet sandwich with nearly zero effort.
