Design Errors: Signs You’ve Made a Mistake

Many people who get into decorating for the first time like to go a little overboard. Sometimes they end up creating a masterpiece of mayhem which, to them, looks just like the creations on television. But, in reality, no television show would ever put such a design disaster on the screen unless it was for TV Bloopers and Practical Jokes. Don’t let your design project go awry; here are some signs that your dream design may actually be more of a nightmare:

1. It looks like a department store exploded in your home. This is most often the case during holidays when stores bring out every bauble and decoration possible. People go overboard and end up going wall-to-wall in cheap and sometimes not-so-cheap decorations. If you go to a store and end up with a cart full of seasonal items, then turn around and put at least 1/2 of them back.

2. That not-so-fresh feeling. There is a big push for going natural and using fresh flowers and bowls of fruits as primary decorations. This is great because it lightens the air with a fresh floral and citrus aroma in whatever room you are in. The problem arises when busy people don’t take the time to replace natural items every few days. Flowers begin to droop and fruit begins to rot. At its best, the whole thing looks bad but, at its worst, it smells bad, too.

3. Sorry, that’s not eclectic. Design rebels love to combine design schemes and colors for something called the “eclectic” look. It’s basically a hodgepodge of items that may not be connected but have a natural look that goes well together. It might be including both aspects of country and urban in a design scheme. All too often, people mistake eclectic for doing whatever they want. Just because your uncle gave you that singing fish for the wall, doesn’t mean it goes great with a country atmosphere, even if you think it’s rustic.

4. Bigger does not mean better. People love using every available inch of space but open areas are good, too. If your room is so full of furniture and other items that you have to suck in your stomach to get through, then you might want to reconsider your design choices (or go on a diet). Clear paths and open areas will not only make your room look airy, but also reduce those pesky accidents.

It’s always a good idea to step back and take in the big picture when making any design changes. Leave the home for a few hours and then come back with some fresh eyes. If you come back and you don’t like it, change it. Do-it-yourself design and decorating means you never have to live with something that doesn’t make you happy.
