Healthy Habits: Reshape Your Food Thinking

I like talking about food. I love eating food, but until recently I hadn’t really thought about food that much. That’s not true, I often thought about ice cream sundaes topped with chocolate, but that’s not the kind of thinking I’m talking about.

How many of you have struggled with weight loss? How many of you have looked in the mirror and didn’t like what you saw? I know I have. I had a terrible body image and no matter how hard I tried, I couldn’t lose the weight. I tried every extreme diet known to man and none of them worked.

People don’t want to eat healthy food. Sure, we eat healthy food all the time, but we don’t subscribe that moniker to it. Diets cause you to abruptly change the way you eat and place the word “healthy” on all the food. Mentally, that means “not tasty” to the general public. You could have a three-foot ice cream sundae topped with pecans and caramel, but if you call it healthy, no one’s going to eat it.

It’s simply the way we think about food. When my wife and I decided to change our eating habits, we didn’t think about what was healthy as much as we thought how can we rethink how we eat. Our snacks changed from chips and candy to cheese and apples. We didn’t think of them as healthy snacks, just different snacks that we like.

We stopped making so much of a main course and instead added more sides. I used to sit down and eat 2-3 cheeseburgers at a sitting and that was it. Now, I eat a single burger…lean meat…, cottage cheese and some potatoes or veggies. I still eat the foods I want, but I get more nutrients, less fat, and its paying off.

We decided not to count how many pounds we have lost because this isn’t a diet – it’s a lifestyle change. Instead, I see how I look in the mirror and how I feel everyday. Suddenly, there is more energy and I am starting to like who I see.

Don’t get me wrong, there is still a long way to go, but it will happen. I still crave the fried chicken and the greasy food and I eat it, but in moderation. I stopped thinking about food as being my enemy and instead as a way to fuel my body. Reshape your ideas about food and you’ll soon see how it will help to reshape the way you see yourself.
