When I think of Thanksgiving decorations for the outdoors, I see a hodgepodge grouping of hay bales with a wide-grinned scarecrow sitting in the middle of it all. It’s always been something I thought was uniquely fall and that fits in perfectly with Turkey Day.
Crafting a makeshift scarecrow is an easy process and is great for a family project (and it just may get the kids way from the computers and Dad away from the football games). Here are the quick and easy steps to creating your own scarecrow scene… brain not included.
1. Gather all the necessary adult clothing to outfit your scarecrow. A pair of old pants, a flannel shirt and an old straw hat are perfect. It doesn’t matter if it is a male or female scarecrow — we are an equal opportunity scarecrow group. You don’t need underwear, because the scarecrow likes going au natural. You can add shoes or boots if you have some spares just lying around. Oh, and don’t forget a burlap sack for the head.
2. Button up the shirt and tie off the ends of the pants. You can’t have straw shooting out the ends of the pants. That would just be ridiculous, and all the other scarecrows would make fun of him. (Scarecrows have very fragile self esteems, you know.)
3. Stuff the shirt and pants with straw and tie them together at the waist so it looks like he’s wearing the pants. It’s so cute, and he has like a size 0 waste; I’m so jealous. Stuff the burlap sack with the straw and then tie the bottom off so it’s remotely head-shaped. Then, draw a face on him. Tie him to the top of the shirt and you’ve got a body. You can then tie gloves to the shirt for hands and tie boots to the pants for feet. Top him off with the hat, and you’ve got a hay-filled sentinel to last until the snow falls.
4. If you have any extra hay bales left, then stack them behind the scarecrow for an added ambience, and get some old dried cornstalks to complete the look. Make sure to take him in at winter, and if the hay isn’t too wet, then he might be useable in the spring for your garden. Just be careful — wet hay can create mold.
You and your family can complete the scarecrow in about an hour. Kids love playing in the hay, and you’ll love having a project that gets them breathing some fresh air.
