It was Logitech, after all, that was on the forefront of the wireless periphery market, bringing computer pointing devices and keyboards to consumers without the need to be plugged directly into their computer.

Today’s gadget from the company comes boasting a brand-new feature, one that’s come on calculators for some time, but never on a computer device. The new Logitech keyboard, K750, is wireless, yes, but it doesn’t require batteries or charges from the computer; instead, it runs entirely on solar energy.

From an engineering standpoint, the K750 is remarkable. Solar panels installed in the top portion of the device provide the electric charge for its internal lithium-ion battery. Unlike the batteries powering the aforementioned solar calculators, the K750 boasts an impressive battery life that doesn’t require direct sunlight on a regular basis. Simply charging the unit to its maximum allows the device to operate in darkness for up to three months.

It’s a great idea, one that combines solar energy with a healthy dose of connivance. Although users will be able to charge the device quickly, my experiences with other battery-operated devices indicate that it will begin losing power as soon as I have to do something important.

The K750 features a sleek design that has become a staple of modern peripherals. At just over a quarter-inch thick, its footprint on your desk is small and attractive. The keys themselves are of the “chicklet” design, each contoured in a unique way to help guide your hands and assist with typing.

Logitech really went all out with its environmentally friendly idea, as well, even incorporating it into the construction of the keyboard. PVC-free and 100-percent recyclable, it is revolutionary, and I’m quite impressed to see a tech company back up their environmentally friendly claims with an excellent product.

The keyboard was designed with Windows users in mind, but Mac addicts will be able to use it for their computing needs, as well. At 2.4 GHz, the wireless connection runs smoothly, with minimal delay in typing or drop-outs. The Logitech K750 hits the North American market later this month, with a European release slated for later this year. List price stands at $80, which is a little steep, but given the quality of the product, it is understandable. Keep an eye out for similar devices from Logitech in the future.

Regardless of your stance on the endless Mac v. PC battle, a little credit has to be given to Steve Jobs and friends for reinventing the style of computers. I remember the first time I caught a glimpse of the latest Apple desktop keyboards: tiny little units that looked ever-so-sexy sitting in front of the large flat-screen displays. It was a pretty special innovation on Apple’s part, taking an essential element of computing and seemingly re-inventing it in both function and aesthetic. It’s an idea that has caught on in the industry, and the result has been a slew of gadgets that look as great as they work.

Case in point: The latest in gadget offerings from Logitech is an innovative blend of style and function, a Bluetooth wireless keyboard that packs some nifty features. Available for both Mac and PC, the Logitech DiNovo Edge has a slim design and comes with a rechargeable dock for its lithium ion battery. The new advanced lithium ion batteries we’re beginning to see in gadgets have some impressive life to them, and the diNovo Edge is no exception. Only a few minutes of charging will give hours of life, and the upright stand saves space in addition to its unique design. The Bluetooth wireless function gives the unit a range of up to 30 feet for mobility around an office workspace.

The diNovo Edge also has some extra features to justify its price. Logitech is touting the PerfectStroke key system, which makes the unit type silently and provides great keystroke control. On the right-hand side of the keyboard is a touch-sensitive volume slider and the most interesting perk, a touch pad and scroll wheel that works for both cursor control and easy scrolling. Finally, the Edge comes with additional hot-keys enabled for Windows XP and Vista (although sadly not for Windows 7). Icons for the hot-keys light up above the top row of keys, adding to the aesthetics of the design.

While the price tag can be a bit steep at around $160, the Edge offers both style and function, with a brushed aluminum body and a number of features not found on typical keyboard units. Its unique design is impressive and sure to make a statement, and the long battery life and Bluetooth wireless make it a versatile and stable unit for any computer. If the trade-off is worthwhile, the Edge can make a great addition to your desktop.
