Modcloth.com has just announced it’s fall season highlights, and I am absolutely in love with their wintery/autumnal mix of colors. Modcloth is affordable and exciting, and if I had the bank to pull it I would love to buy from Modcloth’s style book every day of the week. But Smarter.com has a few select items that can help recreate the Modcloth look without having to pay the bill. Here’s a few tips:

Norma Kamali: First Time Ever at NY Fashion Week

Posted September 2, 2009 by ritika

In the fashion industry, runway fashion has never been readily available for purchase to the public until six months after the revelation.

Norma Kamali has been noticing that today’s advanced technology and the Internet-based connectivity makes the latest fashion from the runway available for viewing all over the world in an instant. This poses a huge problem for the fashion industry because by the time the latest fashion is available for the public, everyone has already seen the spring line for the upcoming year and the “latest” fashion becomes old news before it’s even on the market.

Norma told the LA Times that fashion used to be an elite institution, but now, designs are accessible for viewing to almost anyone via the Internet.

As a result of all this–for the first time ever, Norma is making her designs available for the public right on the spot at the upcoming NY Fashion Week.

I really like that Norma’s attempting to redirect the high fashion runway. She’s adapting to advancement because although high technology is beneficial to society in infinite ways, it’s taking the mystification and exclusiveness out of the fashion industry. Instead of sitting back, Norma’s doing something about it–she’s keeping up with our fast paced world and allowing us to have what we want instantly. That’s just the way our generation is–instant gratification.

Here are some of Norma Kamali’s previous designs. She really knows what she’s doing:

Her parachute dresses were one of the biggest things to hit the runway.

She’s particularly known for her wrapped swimwear. It’s very flattering because it conceals the mid-area.

This is her “sleeping bag coat” that was also a notable hit on the runway. For really cold places, this is really cute!

This is my favorite! Her “retro pin up” swimwear.

Can’t wait to see what she has in store for us this year....just a little over a week left until Fashion  Week!

    Montreal

In two weekends, I’m going to Montreal! It’s going to be fantastic and wonderful, and I’m going to have to learn how to bear with the snow. Two inches fell today in Providence, the streets and sidewalks were slick with ice, and I was already grumbling about how I wish spring would just come…consider me a masochist, but I’m heading up north to Montreal for a much-needed vacation. As I look out my window and watch the snowplows rumble down the street, all I can think of is what jacket would keep me warm in Canada in February, but not feel like a polar bear?

And here are the answers I came up with:

    M. Nico Insulated Women’s Coat: On sale for $499

    fur coat

Nanette Lepore Emperor’s New Jacket: $525

    Burberry High Collar Coat: $550

Falling Head over Heels for: First Impression Jackets

As I talk so often about how to travel towards a certain location or space, I’d like to extend the concept of “travel” to a psychological level: we all know that what you wear effects your first impressions, and now that coats are a necessity, it will often be the first article of clothing your interviewer/boss/date will see. Most make the mistake of wearing the same grungy tan-toned trench coat to protect your sparkly clothes underneath…but if that washed out sheet of fabric is the first thing they see, don’t bank on a good impression. And with so many fun jackets out there to enjoy, why not treat yourself to some color?

The Romantic: Deep purple with a feminine cut and light frill? Who could ask for a more charming, sweet impression?

Kimichi and Blue Ruffle Collar Coat: $140

The Loudmouth: Red is a loud color, but if you’re a city gal, this is one way to show your energy and passion.

                                                         WESC - Women’s Thora Duffel Coat: $202

The Lionness: Let your inner diva loose with this fashionable vest and fur-lined color. Pair with a while long sleeve shirt and jeans for a chill night on the town.

                                                         Anzevino & Florence - Women’s Cloak: $98.00

No matter which personality you prefer, all are able to make a splash. Experiment! And enjoy the weather and light jackets while it lasts.
