You May Want to be a Star, but Why Dress like One?

Posted October 24, 2008 by colleen

You may dress like a star, but that doesn’t make you one. Even the best and brightest of our contemporary Hollywood starlets had to start somewhere, and rarely looked much better than you or me. Take Sarah Jessica Parker, for example, now freely associated with Manolo Blahnik’s and Dior. Back in our childhood, she was nothing more than the bimbo witch from Hocus Pocus. Save dressing up as a movie star for Halloween—dress like a movie star in progress every other day.

Besides the unruly hair, score SJP’s pre-stardom look with thick, oversized sweaters and high-waisted jeans. The awkwardness of our childhood is coming back in fashion, my friends, and there’s nothing that says Hollywood Project Type 1 like an undiscovered beauty.

Find oversized sweaters and high waisted jeans at Smarter.com.

And if you really love the cloak, treat yourself to this affordable adaptation:

                                                        poncho

                                                                                 $27.99 at Target

If you really are a misguided star, you should pair the poncho with a floor length hippie sweater and hiking boots, but we don’t suggest being that dedicated.

Style on a College Budget: Look for Less

As fast as the days turned too hot in the sultry summer heat, the lure for boots, tights and sweater dresses is also catching on. Here’s a simple look from Banana Republic. Marked at $130.00, the sweater is a bit out of range for young shoppers with a budget. No worries! To snag this look, I’ve found similar styles for a fraction of the price.

    Twelve by Twelve sweater: $36.00

Try any of these other fabulous finds with your choice of tights or skinny jeans and boots:

    Forever21 Grey sweater: $26.90

    H81 (Heritage 1981) Grey sweater $22.90

       Forever21 Teal tights: $5.80

    Express Black clutch: $23.70

    Comfy Deal: V-Neck Cardigan

Posted September 11, 2007 by valentina

So, I’ve heard whisperings that the v-neck cardigan is the thang this season.  Personally, I couldn’t be happier since that’s my best sweater cut, and it’s yours too if you’re chesty or if you want to balance out a curvy lower half.  The v, as you may know, is a champ at bringing the eye upward and showing off the clavicle, which is a nice and sculpted spot on most women.

Note: they can be inexplicably hard to get when they’re not “in,” so you may want to follow my lead and stock up while the gettin’s good.  This one from Bloomingdale’s is on sale for $44.99 (was $58.99).  I also bought a great maroon (I’m not sure what color they call it–maybe “cabernet” or something like that to appeal to the yuppies) one from JCrew recently (about $80 and so soft).  The Isaac Mizrahi for Target line also has some this season, but the one I bought is acrylic and not so comfy.

    Fall Preview: Slouchy Belted Sweaters

As I said the other day in my padded shoulders post, the 80s are here to stay this season. I know some people turn their noses up at this notion, but I for one am pleased as punch. Finally, I can wear any 80s styles I want and my mom can’t do anything about it! Freedom. And now I see that oversized, slouchy sweaters are making a comeback–I’m partial to the belted variety. The whole thing feels very updated Denise Huxtable to me, and there’s absolutely nothing wrong with that.

    Sweater above: Alloy, $14.99

    See by Chloe, $470

    Marc by Marc Jacobs, $298
    Fever Tweed Cardigan, $78

Ashley Judd to Create Fashion Line

    Ashley Judd
Another day, another celebrity fashion designer. Ashley Judd just signed a deal with Goody’s to create her own fashion line. Like most of these lines, quality and luxury are promised along with femininity and attention to detail. Hmm…we’ll see about that. What is new about Judd’s line is that organic tees and sweaters will be offered. Well, that’s nice.

Now, I like Ashley Judd a lot, but my opinion on clothing collections of the celeb variety is well documented. And while I do have a little more faith in Ashley than say Jennifer Love Hewitt, I’m not holding my breath that this Goody’s line is going to charm me.

The line will debut in this fall.
