Desert Do’s and Don’ts: Celeb Styles from the Coachella Valley Music Festival

Posted April 22, 2009 by desiree
Found in: Tips & Advice, Celebrity Style

Celebrating its 10-year anniversary, this year’s Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival just wouldn’t have been complete without the usual celeb sightings and good old Paris Hilton in a bikini top.  Needless to say, the Empire Polo Fields are far from the red carpet and in that sweltering desert heat, minimal clothing definitely embodied the phrase “less is more.”  Due to the extreme temperatures amidst the hoopla, the rules of fashion were bent slightly in order to avoid heatstroke, meaning: as far as desert fashion is concerned, anything goes. That being said, praise shall be awarded to those who actually dressed appropriately.  A few of the things on my ‘yuck’ list included knee high boots–dark leather up to the knee in summertime heat is enough to make a cactus scream!  And who wants sweaty legs all day?

Apparently former The Hills star Audrina Patridge does.

Moving right along…a bikini clad Paris Hilton made my yuck list for obvious reasons, but I was most surprised by the gold Tory Burch flats on her feet that are very last season to me.  Sandals may have been a better option.

She could’ve used a tip or two from sis Nicky Hilton who looked nice and cool in her retro-looking, floral print mini dress.

Other golden gals included Chloe Sevigny, whose look shifted between 90’s floral grunge (which was still cute!)….

…and 1950’s beach chic, I would opt for the latter of the two–white gauzy dresses in the summer are perfection.

Reese Witherspoon kept it simple in her cotton shirt dress and fedora while sticking with beau Jake Gyllenhaal throughout the fest.

Cat Deely’s embroidered romper was definitely unique and very hip…….

….and Kate Bosworth realized that you can never go wrong with nautical stripes.

Although these ladies all looked fabulous, pin-up prize Dita Von Teese takes the cake for best dressed all weekend. The burlesque beauty stayed glamorous all weekend long in two vintage inspired frocks that screamed summer!  How she kept that crimson color on her lips from melting off shall remain a mystery…

So with my post music fest buzz and new suntan, I’ve decided on a few of my favorite things that would work well while partying in the middle of a desert:

This Twelfth Street by Cynthia Vincent Strapless Jumpsuit ($240) is lightweight and perfect for browning your shoulders without getting a funky tan line.

TOMS shoes are super comfy and easy to slip on and off–something you may want to do after you plop down in the grass to enjoy a good band and frozen lemonade, the gold glitter is fun and gives a glammy, rock n’ roll edge.

When it comes to keeping the sun out of your face, a large sunhat will do…so will a colorful nylon parasol which is more unique and probably cheaper.  You can find a really pretty selection at LunaBazaar.com.

Now, this ensemble is only complete with a pair of shades, and I only hope this is the season that the fashionables ween themselves off of the faux Ray Ban craze.

    Truly, Madly, Vintage

I have always loved all things vintage. I have spent blissful hours hunting through rails of vintage items for that special item. One of my favourite finds is a burgundy Austin Powers style 60’s jacket, covered in a wild and happening paisley design. It has a glamourous fluffy colour which I adore, I match it up with my black heeled boots and off I go - trotting down the street, with a funky James Brown tune playing in my groovy head.

Vintage is true because it is authentic style, vintage is art expressed as clothing, vintage is defiant, enduring the test of time in the world of the modern, commercial, fashion industry.

Let vintage be whatever you want it to be for you, mix eras and ideas, emulate your style icons, have fun. Even better, put together stunning outfits without a stunning price tag.

Audrey Hepburn, one of the ultimate style icons, looks amazing in sunglasses and a diamond tiara!

If you like candy, you’ll be even sweeter in this Candy Pink Silk Dress from Viva Vintage Clothing: $85

Do the whole Lauren Bacall/Humphrey Bogart thing in these 1940’s vintage babydoll round toed shoes, $28.00 from Rocky Mountain Retro.

Don’t forget to finish off your vintage outfit with perfect pouting lips. Invest in some pretty vintage pinks and classic film star red shades! Try one of these fresh shades from Estee Lauder.

    Designer Inspired Look: Derek Lam

Fashion Week is less than a month away…I’m counting down the days! It’ll be thrilling to finally get some new collections to take stock of and gain inspiration from. It’s 90 degrees here in sunny Los Angeles but I’m already dreaming of boots and sweaters. I combed through several Resort 2009 collections just to make sure none had slipped through the cracks when I stumbled across some Derek Lam creations.

And just so you know, trench coats aka “the trench,” which DL used a lot of in his Resort styles, become terribly trendy every spring, but I like trenches all year long.

They make for a perfect layering item and give you that Audrey Hepburn a la “Breakfast At Tiffany’s” look. Now what girl doesn’t want that, I ask?

Personal Pick of the Week: Shady Business

Tom Ford shadesDuring a quick trip to San Francisco recently, I came across a delightful pair of vintage sunny’s at one of my favorite stores in the Mission, The Painted Bird. I love them so much that I was inspired to go with some sassy shades for my pick this week.

I went with Tom Ford Eyewear because he masters every project he comes into contact with, from his impeccable clothing designs (he was behind the curtain at Gucci and Yves Saint-Laurent for several years), to Black Orchid, his intoxicating fragrance, and now sophisticated eyewear. The gradient lenses on the Jack Wayfarer Sunglasses are very French mod, ooh la la!
