Desert Do’s and Don’ts: Celeb Styles from the Coachella Valley Music Festival

Posted April 22, 2009 by desiree
Found in: Tips & Advice, Celebrity Style

Celebrating its 10-year anniversary, this year’s Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival just wouldn’t have been complete without the usual celeb sightings and good old Paris Hilton in a bikini top.  Needless to say, the Empire Polo Fields are far from the red carpet and in that sweltering desert heat, minimal clothing definitely embodied the phrase “less is more.”  Due to the extreme temperatures amidst the hoopla, the rules of fashion were bent slightly in order to avoid heatstroke, meaning: as far as desert fashion is concerned, anything goes. That being said, praise shall be awarded to those who actually dressed appropriately.  A few of the things on my ‘yuck’ list included knee high boots–dark leather up to the knee in summertime heat is enough to make a cactus scream!  And who wants sweaty legs all day?

Apparently former The Hills star Audrina Patridge does.

Moving right along…a bikini clad Paris Hilton made my yuck list for obvious reasons, but I was most surprised by the gold Tory Burch flats on her feet that are very last season to me.  Sandals may have been a better option.

    Paris Hilton

She could’ve used a tip or two from sis Nicky Hilton who looked nice and cool in her retro-looking, floral print mini dress.

Other golden gals included Chloe Sevigny, whose look shifted between 90’s floral grunge (which was still cute!)….

…and 1950’s beach chic, I would opt for the latter of the two–white gauzy dresses in the summer are perfection.

Reese Witherspoon kept it simple in her cotton shirt dress and fedora while sticking with beau Jake Gyllenhaal throughout the fest.

Cat Deely’s embroidered romper was definitely unique and very hip…….

….and Kate Bosworth realized that you can never go wrong with nautical stripes.

Although these ladies all looked fabulous, pin-up prize Dita Von Teese takes the cake for best dressed all weekend. The burlesque beauty stayed glamorous all weekend long in two vintage inspired frocks that screamed summer!  How she kept that crimson color on her lips from melting off shall remain a mystery…

So with my post music fest buzz and new suntan, I’ve decided on a few of my favorite things that would work well while partying in the middle of a desert:

This Twelfth Street by Cynthia Vincent Strapless Jumpsuit ($240) is lightweight and perfect for browning your shoulders without getting a funky tan line.

TOMS shoes are super comfy and easy to slip on and off–something you may want to do after you plop down in the grass to enjoy a good band and frozen lemonade, the gold glitter is fun and gives a glammy, rock n’ roll edge.

When it comes to keeping the sun out of your face, a large sunhat will do…so will a colorful nylon parasol which is more unique and probably cheaper.  You can find a really pretty selection at LunaBazaar.com.

Now, this ensemble is only complete with a pair of shades, and I only hope this is the season that the fashionables ween themselves off of the faux Ray Ban craze.

The Grammy Awards: More Red Carpet Mishaps?

Posted February 9, 2009 by deborah dera

Hello, fellow fashion friends! Last night we saw some of our favorite artists strut the red carpet during their arrivals to the Grammy Awards. While there were a few stunning ensembles, there were also a few that I’m not sure I’d want to be caught dead in.

       Jennifer Hudson

Take, for example, Jennifer Hudson. Her outfit is far from the worst I’ve ever seen, but she’s SO pretty and she looks SO awkward here. I have no idea why her stylists can’t find something a bit more flattering - or at least a more appropriate pair of shoes. Truth be told, Jennifer could have shown up in a plastic bag dress with a rope belt and we’d still love her. Her performance during the awards ceremony was stellar!

      M.I.A.

Now on to the atrocities. M.IA. may be pregnant, but there’s simply no excuse for dressing like Mimi from the Drew Carey Show. All she needs here is a bit of makeup and she’d be a shoe-in for the part. What was she thinking?

     Bia Ling

Bia Ling’s dress made me cringe the moment I saw her. This freakish pink dress gave me 80’s flashbacks and I might’ve overlooked it completely (partially out of disgust, partially because it might’ve been cute) had it not been for the gigantic pink bow at the bottom. Who thinks of these things?

    Paris Hilton

Oh dear - poor Paris Hilton is single again. Sort of makes me wonder how desperate she is. Her dress is cute, but looks like it belongs in her lingerie drawer - not on the red carpet.

      Sara Bareilles

Last, but certainly not least, is the usually stunning Sara Bareilles. That’s a feather skirt, folks. Need I say more?

Call me harsh - agree with me - whatever floats your boat. These fashion statements simply don’t work for me. As a matter of fact, I’m inclined to believe that British television personality Fearne Cotton had a decent idea when she told a local paper that she was going to wear thermals, a long dress, and UGG boots to the Bafta awards. It may be a bit colder in the UK than it is in Hollywood, but she’ll be comfortable!

And, by the way - after my last red carpet post someone asked why I didn’t post links to places where they could find the dresses I showed. In today’s case I ask - would you really want to buy one of these?

The Worst “Sexy” Celebrity Halloween Costumes

Posted October 31, 2007 by valentina

Just because they’re celebrities doesn’t mean they have good Halloween Costume ideas. In fact, these are some of the worst I’ve seen. Really, the whole over-the-top-sexy costume is so tired and especially on celebs (that means you, Dennis Rodman). Hello! Don’t they get enough attention already?

I present to you this year’s Icky Halloween Costume Hall of Shame:

Britney Spears goes as a”sexy” wench.

Aubrey O’Day goes as a “sexy” football player in clear heels.

    Averil Levigne goes as a…..?

Paris Hilton goes as a “sexy” Alice in Wonderland, which seems a tad inappropriate considering Alice is suppose to be a child! Leave it to Paris.

Dennis Rodman as a poorly dressed woman.

paris hilton leaving jailPeople’s Off the Rack gave readers the lowdown on the outfit a beaming Paris Hilton wore upon her release from jail last night. Here are the goods:

Jeans: from Paris’ own upcoming denim line for
Kitson, $88 (way to turn lemons into promotional lemonade, Paris.)
Jacket: Petrozilla, $448 (I figured as much with that piping)
    Shoes: Marcello Toshi, $300

No, I can’t believe I’m conveying this information to you, either. Oh Paris, what have you turned this world into?
