Bikini Jeans: Wear Them if You Dare!

Posted May 13, 2009 by lavenya dilip

When a client of a Japanese clothing company, Sanna’s wished for jeans that sat lower than her hips but will be snug enough not to require constant pulling up, Designer Sandra Tanimura let her creative juices flow and came up with low risers held up by bikini strings-voila!  Bikini jeans were born!

The style has become quite a hit in Japan and is all set to take off in Europe.  Will United States be next?  While the cut might flatter a stick thin figure, won’t a simple belt be a more flattering and reasonable solution for normal women, some wonder?  Then of course there is the case of not wearing under wear.  How many of us will be comfortable with that?

Fashion Accessorizing: Keeping it Chic, Not Shabby

Yes, it’s true, sandal season is upon us…but flip flops aren’t exactly what I have in mind.  Spring is a good time to begin shopping around for fancy footwear that reveals your feet without getting too beachy.  Wedges are cool for spring fashion, and you can definitely carry them into summer when it arrives, sporting them with shorts, skirts, and jeans. I personally love the look of wedges with shorts, flowy blouses and a little jacket when it cools off in the evenings.  I would also opt for this style over traditional three-inch heels since they are going to be more comfortable and not so hard on the balls of your feet.

The Miz Mooz ‘Gizmo’ Platforms ($129.95) are one of my personal picks this week. Not only do these wedges look comfortable, but they are huarache-inspired with their tan woven leather and wooden platform.

Being obsessed with vintage inspired pieces that particularly look like they could have come from the 1970’s, my eye was instantly drawn to these shoes.  I would wear these with some cropped, fitted jeans that are cut right above the ankle.  This is a unique trend I noticed while in San Francisco, but I always wondered…how do you find pants that length?  Well the answer was simple after I began taking my jeans to a tailor to be altered.  This is a fun style for the warmer seasons if you’ve ever just been too hot to wear long jeans and kind of wanted to go for a 1950’s chic look. Try it…you’ll like it! Now, back to my remaining picks…

For months now I have been neglecting and rejecting stylish handbags, and instead resorted to hauling around a Marc Jacobs canvas tote bag instead.  As far as purpose goes, canvas totes are great, but they aren’t always very cute when you’re gettin’ dolled up for a night out.  So, I finally emptied mine out and bought a new purse.  A real purse again!  My choice was a fairly inexpensive vintage leather bag, simple with good color.  If I would’ve had a little more dough to work with I would have splurged on the L.A.M.B. ‘Darjeeling’ Small Flap Shoulder Bag, $345, Nordstrom.com

This bag is so mod! I love it. The colors and hardware are also very nautical inspired making it great for the summer months.

And now, my final personal pick for today are these stunning Stephen Dweck Agate earrings, $395, Neimanmarcus.com

    Agate Earrings

These are so beautiful! They would look fantastic with a casual long dress, but I personally like wearing fancy items like this with a worn in t-shirt and jeans with some little gold ballet flats. Combining a slightly rugged look with such a delicate accessory is a fashion risk worth taking.

    Swishing You A Merry Christmas

Swishing is the new shopping, namely because you can pick up amazing bargains to update your wardrobe absolutely free!

It’s a shopping revolution and a great way to swish through the economic downturn.

Swishing simply involves swapping clothing/jewellery/accessories at swishing parties organized with your friends. Now ladies, we all know have those items in our wardrobe that we haven’t worn in ages - but someone else will! Organize your own swishing party and display everything on hangers/ladders/shelves, etc. When selecting an item to swish, make sure it’s of an acceptable quality. The host of the party opens the event with a countdown and then swish away. At a recent swish party an original Jean Paul Gaultier Jacket was picked up as well as some other fashion treasures. Check out this swishing site for more info:  http://www.swishing.org/

Whilst your waiting to organize or attend your first swishing party, visit Fashionspace.com

It’s a fantastic fashion website where you can purchase new and used bargains, vintage and accessories. Most importantly it also has it’s own ’swapshop’, the same principle as swishing but online!

I love this amazing silver metallic coat from The Vintage Wardrobe. It’s only $15.70!!! And it’s only still there because it’s not my size!! Hurry up!

This is a beautiful gold plated waist belt from Crimson Fashion on Fashionspace.com, only $7.84,brand new.

I had to include this stunning 1950’s little black dress finished in lace and satin,$47.00. Find it at the aptly titled shop

Little Black Vintage Dress on Fashionspace!

Personal Pick: Grey Ant High-Waist Denim

So, in case you haven’t noticed, I’m really inspired by styles from the 1970’s. Let me re-phrase that: I wish it were the 1970’s. Although, I may be alone on my quest to find dresses, blouses, and certain denim washes that channel a young Linda Ronstadt (love her!), I know a trend when I see one and this summer it’s all about the high-waisters…jeans that is.

No, the look isn’t for everyone but when done right, the look is terribly chic. Dittos made a resurgence a few years ago and are probably my favorites, but a lot of denim company’s are doing they’re own version of the high-waisted, wide leg trouser, and Grey Ant was a new one I came across this week. My favorite thing about these is the wash…I would wear them with a red cami tucked in and a skinny brown belt. Voila! Blue Bayou here I come!

I love low back pockets because it creates the illusion that I have a bigger booty than I really do. :) These dark denim True Religion jeans are great because they are extra low rise & stretchy for those horribly bloated times of the month.

Denim Deal:Goldsign Orchid Jeans on Sale

I’ve liked these Goldsign Orchid jeans for awhile. With the wide leg and mid-rise, they cut quite a sophisticated silhouette.  I’ve tried them on before and the denim is pretty soft and not too heavy–they’ll translate into spring pretty easily.  They’re also a good addition to a work wardrobe because of their trouser fit.  Wear them with a t-shirt on the weekends, and dress them up with a blazer and heels on a casual friday.

Goldsign Orchid Wide Leg Trouser Jeans, $124 (old price=$209)

    Denim Deal: Tory Burch Jeans

I know Tory Burch is a little overexposed right now, but I’m still a fan.  I love the clean lines and subtle “cute” quality to her clothes.  You know, they’re just cute enough, without going too overboard for my tastes.  That brings me to these jeans, which are on sale at Bloomingdales for $105 (old price=$175).

These are super classic, with a rise that’s not too low, a slight flare and a nice shade of indigo. Plus they have the signature Tory Burch hardware on the pockets and fly.

Good for night, good for day.

Denim Deal: Rich & Skinny Jeans

These Rich & Skinny (I know, but I think they’re being ironic) jeans have the perfect silhouette–they’re kind of like those old Levis Sta-Prest jeans. When pants have a higher waist and a flared leg like this, the effect is really elongating and flattering on a lot of body types, from curvy to lanky. It’s also nice that there are so many jeans out now without distressing or faux fading since a nice, dark even wash seems so fresh at the moment.
