    VMA Fashion Spotlight: Beyonce Knowles

Posted September 14, 2009 by ritika

Beyonce is one of the most graceful, yet strong role models of our generation.

She saved the show last night after Kanye West was being his egotistical self when he ruined Taylor Swift’s acceptance speech by saying that Beyonce should have won Best Female Video of the Year.

Graciously, she gave up her allotted time to speak when she won Best Video of Year and let Taylor have her moment.

She looked very lavish in her short, frilled, and very low cut dress with oversized accessories–but her actions were charming, classy, and genuinely humble.

Not only is she a great role model because of her stunning personality but she’s also always got it pulled together fashion-wise as well. Her black pumps gave a sexy touch to her red dress. Her outfit was sophisticated and bold–just like Beyonce herself. She cleverly wore only a few pieces of jewelry to compensate for the large size of her earrings and bracelets. We can all learn a thing or two from Beyonce–we can definitely see her halo!

The Bold and the Beautiful at the BET Awards

Most of us ordinary mortals would morph into a ball of nerves at the thought of  going out dripping in sequins and gold.  Fortunately for the ladies at BET awards, they have the attitude and star power to pull it off!  The highlights of the June 28 BET awards , besides the tribute to the King of Pop was of course Beyonce’s alarmingly gravity defying mini dress by the French Designer house, Balmain . LeToya Luckett and Alicia Keys were some of the many who decided to sport the same look.  To break the monotony of brash, bold and gold,  there were some rebels like Tyra Banks in mens’ wear inspired pant suit and Toccara Jones in a rather safe, tasteful, black jumpsuit.  At the very least, the gals know how to keep things interesting and spicy…

That’s right, who is rocking Michael Jackson’s badass jacket?  Rihanna and Beyonce are!  The two divas have been spotted in a military jacket that strangely resembles Michael’s jacket from back in the day.  If you have big hips you should definitely try this jacket as it will make your figure look more proportioned.

I think military jackets look more sophisticated when you wear them in a longer version and has a fitted silhouette.

Shoulder Pads are Back from the 80’s

Lately I have noticed a lot of influences from the 80’s that are coming back such as neon colors, the whole sneaker culture, big hair and more. Even though this fashion style is clearly from the 80’s they still look modern and look good on many of us. On the other hand I’m not to cheerful on the return of shoulder pads. That look is so outdated plus I don’t think anybody suits this look, not even Victoria Beckham!

    The Ice Queen Cometh

My ultra cool, well connected cousin from New York, has invited me on a trip to Sweden, where we will be staying in an ambassador’s house. My cousin through his good schooling, has rubbed shoulders with celebrities and such like for many of his 25 years. However, he seems totally unimpressed and underwhelmed by it all. He has driven his younger brother David and I to distraction when he ‘forgets’ to tell us that he went to a party and discussed basketball with Denzel Washington, has been invited to Paris to stay with one of his old college friends, whose father,  lives next door to Johnny Depp. He never bothered to mention that he was invited to meet Beyonce by Jay Z at their house. He has just returned from Isabella Rosselini’s house in Paris, invited by her glamorous daughter Electra. He is ever so blase about visiting the Hamptons whenever he goes.

Well I finally had enough and demanded that I be invited along somewhere or else! So we’re off to Sweden in the New Year. Now I know this trip does not necessarily involve meeting any Hollywood stars or even Johnny Depp, but I’m working on it. At least I will be staying in plush surroundings.  I also realize that at sub zero temperatures I have very little fashion scope to try and look glam. So I have decided that my only glam option is jewelery. Even if I am wrapped up in warm clothing to my eyeballs, I am hoping that these following pieces will help me twinkle a little bit!

Sterling Silver Star Earrings from Monaco, $117.59

    Filligree Earrings, $17.82

I will definitely look the part in this icy Charm Bracelet, handmade in Greece:

Grammy Award Fashion: Hits & Misses

Posted February 11, 2008 by valentina

Wow! I actually sat through the entire Grammy Award ceremony last night. That hasn’t happened since I was a New Kid fan–you know, when I would watch every last second to make sure I didn’t miss even one glimpse of Donnie or Jordan. But last night was fun! Amy Winehouse, Kanye West, Tina Turner, and Cindy Lauper! It was like Christmas.

Now, for the fashion. Let’s just say there were a few hits and misses:

MISS: I hate to be mean to Nelly Furtado because I’ve always liked her music (even her second album…well, sort of), but this dress tests the limits of my affection. It’s time for some tough love. What was her stylist thinking? It’s a pretty color, but didn’t anyone take her body type into consideration when choosing a gown for the biggest night in music? And you know that she’s not comfortable in this thing either–hands on thighs are always a dead giveaway for “I’m afraid this dress in unflattering.” Oh Nelly, they did you wrong!

EH: I can’t decide if this is a hit or miss exactly. It’s definitely flattering, which isn’t usually a problem for Beyonce. I just wish this woman would wear something other than metallics, like maybe a color. Although I don’t know if powder blue chiffon is the answer. The top looks like it’s melting.

Hit: I like it. Florals are in, and this halter dress works well on Carrie Underwood. It’s kind of perfect for Carrie’s sexy-girl-with-a-weentzy-bit-of-bad-girl image.

Minus the shoes, this is a Hit. I love a short dress for the Grammys. Gowns are okay, but an interesting little dress is better. I like this color on Corinne Bailey Rae, but the shoes look more career than biggest music event of the year.

Miss: I love the color on Fergie, but I”m nervous about what’s going on atop. It’s also pretty boring–it looks like a banana peel, which is an obvious if unfortunate risk when you wear a yellow sheath dress.

Hit: I accept that I’m probably alone in this, but I liked Fantasia’s Grammy look. The dress is super flattering and edgy. The hair? I don’t know, it just works for me…maybe she’s the new Patty Labelle of R&B. At least stylewise.

American Music Awards: Jewels and Metallics Rule

Posted November 19, 2007 by valentina

Metallics just won’t quit–they’ve been the award show staple for so long now, and they were still going strong as of last night’s American Music Awards. Lots of ladies did gold or silver for the show, and some even added jewels to the mix. Looks itchy.

As usual, Rihanna wins. Oh, and equally as usual, Beyonce went the extra mile and glittered her bosom.

    Is Beyonce Addicted?

While watching the VMAs last night I was struck by two things: one, it’s no longer expected that performers even lip sync convincingly anymore (that means you, Britney Spears and Chris Brown) and, two, Beyonce has a serious addiction to metallics.

It seems that gold and silver ensembles have become Beyonce’s security blanket. She can’t get enough of them:

And this is just a few of the I found. She’s obsessed with sparkle and shine.

Celeb Denim of the Moment: JBrand

For the past few months, the ubiquitous Seven Jeans haven’t been so ever present among the celeb set. That’s because there’s a new denim obsession in town, baby, and it’s called JBrand. One of the first to usher in the wide-legged and high-waisted jeans trends that are slowly but surely making their way into the mainstream, JBrand has smartly capitalized on the inevitable backlash against super-low bootlegs, whose spell we’re beginning to wake from. The most popular seems to be the high-waisted “Doll,” which Ms. Alba is sporting, the voluminous-legged “Pallazzo” worn by Katie Holmes and the high and skinny “Bardot” seen on Beyonce.
