What are Your Favorite Fashion Films?

Posted September 8, 2009 by evette

I think the obvious most recently film would be Sex and the City: The Movie. And, hopefully the next Sex and the City movie will not disappoint! The LATimes Blogs featured Turner Classic Movie’s list of their favorites.

The most recently movie on the list is Flashdance (1983).  I just saw a shirt that totally reminded me of this movie at Forever21.com.

    H81 Cut-Off Athletic Top: $16.90, Forever21.com

Breakfast at Tiffany’s (1961) , is on the list…of course!  The oversized glasses like the ones Audry Hepburn wore are still in style…

    Gucci Heart Crest Sunglasses: $295

Check out the entire list here.

Gearing Up for NYC Fashion Week

Posted July 30, 2009 by ritika

One of the biggest, most important events of the fashion industry is only a couple of months away and designers and buyers alike are frantically preparing for the Spring 2010 line. NYC Fashion Week will officially kick off with a “Fashion’s Night Out” on September 10th, where designers from Lily Donaldson to Ralph Lauren will showcase some of their clothing.

This commemorative shopping event is probably one of the fashion industry’s attempt at rejuvenating the economically faltered fashion-show industry. Two days ago, fashion elites and members of the Council of Fashion Designers of America met at a town hall meeting to discuss the impact that the recession is having on the fashion industry. Donna Karen said, “We are in a crisis.”

It’s really true though, tough economic times pretty much categorize fashion shows as irrelevant–I can count the number of people that I know who would be able to purchase the high fashion clothing showcased at this fashion show on one hand.

So the fact that the kick off event for this year’s NYC Fashion Week is a giant shopping celebration makes me think that fashion gurus like Diane Von Frustenberg must be feeling REALLY optimistic. She said at the meeting:

“There is no way when you are in the middle of a tsunami that you can change absolutely everything. But one thing that we can do and that I would like to do is make New York Fashion Week the most dynamic fashion week in the world.” (source: NY magazine)

But it’s not all about the spending. Fashion’s Night Out is also featuring a clothing drive and the donations will benefit the NY Aids Fund.

Forget Polyvore!  Looklet gives you the opportunity to dress real models with the most fabulous clothes.  The concept is in fact quite similar to Polyvore.  You choose a background, a model and the clothes that you wish to use.  The site has recently been launched but it’s already a huge success.

Go to Looklet.com for more info and start dressing your model!

Our economy is in the crapper, but you want to stay in fashion.  If you are low on cash for a new wardrobe for spring, check out these tips found on MSNBC.com.  They show you how to shop in your own closet before you hit the mall to spend like a crazy person.  I love stuff like this!  They basically show you how to buy accessories that will change up the look of your staple fashion pieces and make them more up to date or season appropriate.

Get Fashion Advice From Your Facebook Friends!

We all want to look good and our friends should be our best critics. If your friends won’t tell you the truth, who will? Smarter.com launched their new Facebook application called “What Would You Buy?This application can be used to create polls to ask your friends for online shopping advice. It’s fun and will help you make everyday fashion decisions. Here is an example of a poll you can create:

For all you ladies who are anticipating a fun-filled and fashionable Homecoming night, I suggest taking pictures of yourself in your top three favorite potential Homecoming dresses. You can share the images on the “What Would You Buy” application and your friends can vote and comment on what they like or dislike about your dresses.

For those ladies who aren’t in high school anyway….let’s say you’ve been saving up to purchase one of the many designer handbags you’ve had you’re eye on.  You can add your favorite handbags to your new poll:  Which designer bag should I buy?

You can also make polls for other types of shopping questions like “What face moisterizer is best?” or “Which chapstick do you prefer?” Smarter.com has over 30 million products to shop through.  If you cannot find exactly the item you’re looking for on Smarter.com, all you need to do is add the image URL (right click on the image and click on “Properties”) from another site.

Sign up for “What Would You Buy?” on Facebook.com here.

    Fashion News: This Just In…

                                                     Alexander McQueen

Rumor has it that designer Alexander McQueen is about to launch a collection at a Target near you. Now you can have affordable designer like pieces hanging out of your closet. I am still having trouble adjusting to the idea, but none the less I am very excited!

McQueen has another line called McQ. Its diffusion is more affordable than his other collection, but now his clothing will be tangeable for everyone. And yes, he already does collaborations with Puma and Samsonite, but real talk- if we’re going to own McQueen, we want to see it (like I said before) hanging in our closet. We don’t need McQueen sneakers because we already have Pumas, and we don’t need expensive luggage that is just going to get dinged up anyway. We need McQueen on our bodies and we need it now!  Let’s hope that the retailer, in keeping with a designer of such caliber, gets materials worthy of his work so they are long lasting. Until then, say a prayer to make this rumor come true.

Stay tuned! I will let you know when the line launches, and it will in the near future!

Fashion & Politics: Versace Hearts Obama

                                          Versace Obama

Obama’s charisma certainly helped him win the Democratic nomination for the 2008 presidential election, but apparently his fashion sense is also being recognized.  I read on ABCNews.com that Donatella Versace dedicated her Spring 2008 men’s collection to Obama:

‘Versace described the Obama-dedicated style as one designed for “a relaxed man who doesn’t need to flex muscles to show he has power.”‘

He doesn’t care much about fashion at all, but I’m sure he’s flattered that he’s “natural” fashion sense is pleasing to high end fashion designers.

     Carries DiarySEX_AND_THE_CITY MOVIE

They’ve come a long way, baby!

Ladies, today is the day!  Not sure how you all are celebrating this fabulous occasion, but I will be attending a Sex & the City: The Movie premiere party tomorrowThe proceeds will go to breast cancer research.  I’ve heard of & read about many other great premiere parties happening this weekend:

    • A party in Kansas City will be sponsored by Passion Parties, FIMB Yoga & Wellness Center in Lee’s SummitThe proceeds will go to the cancer charity Bright Pink.
    • There will be a Cosmos and Champagne for Charity party benefiting the Diabetes Foundation in South Florida
    • In Santa Rosa, CA there is a party at Rialto Cinemas Lakeside where attendees are encouraged to dress up as their favorite character!  I have a feeling fanatics will dress up regardless if the party they are attending encourages it. :)

Sex and the City The Movie

Something interesting I saw on AskMen.com that you may already know aboutVictoria Beckham turned down a cameo in the movie!?  WHY!?

Speaking of men, if any men are reading this you should attend one of these parties.  I’m not telling you to go watch the movie, which I know may be torturous for some, but I don’t know of one chick that will NOT be attending some sort of Sex & the City: The Movie party.  So, go ahead and go to a party, but leave the cheesy lines at home…okay?

Speaking of the men & the movie, all I can say is if John, A.K.A. Big, mucks things up again and isn’t sure if Carrie’s “the one” at the end of the movie.  I’ll be pretty…peeved.

    How will you be celebrating?

What’s the weirdest Sex & the City party idea you’ve heard of?

If you decide to stay home and avoid the crazy crowds at the box office this weekend click here for instructions on how to make a cosmopolitan.  You and your friends can drink & eat while watching Sex & the City seasons to refresh your memory before you watch the movie NEXT weekend!
