    Latest Obsession: Bandeau Bras

Posted September 18, 2009 by desiree
Found in: Deal of the Day

My latest obsession? My new cotton bandeau bra. I love this thing! Sometime last week, I adventured out to an Urban Outfitters located out in the Valley. I was shopping around for some home items and had heard they had a decent selection. This was true, but to my dismay, I just didn’t feel like spending more than $20 on anything. So I went home with no apartment decor, but instead a $10 bra and $4.99 stainless steel flask. I just love cheap purchases. Bandeaus are nothing new, but I have gotten really into them in the last few months. They usually come in pretty colors, are a really awesome alternative to traditional strapless bras, and shouldn’t ever be too expensive. I stopped wearing strapless bras a while ago. I just found them too uncomfortable and troublesome. I barely spend money on new regular bras let alone strapless ones, but I am finding that bandeaus are different. They give just the right amount of cleavage control and do the trick for strapless wears. I’ve heard the complaint from bustier women that bandeaus just don’t give enough support, but many styles have boning and under wire. I have both types and like wearing both, but of course prefer my bandeau sans under wire. It’s just more comfortable. So I picked up my $10 bandeau and have worn it with almost everything. It’s a nice neutral shade of nude and goes great underneath sheer tops and low cut styles. Bandeaus are perfect for you out there that want coverage, but don’t want to have to wear an entire tank underneath something.

Lacey bandeaus are pretty, but cotton ones are most practical yet still manage to look sexy.
These are my two favorite colors in the style I picked up…

    BDG Bandeau $10, urbanoutfitters.com

No hooks, straps, or underwire. You can just pull this bad boy on and handwash it in the sink when it comes time. Super comfy with no tags inside and a little gathering in the front for minimal cleavage exposure. This is the perfect kind of bra for a button down shirt dress. Leave one button open for this bra to be slightly exposed and it almost works like another accessory. You might wonder…but won’t bandeaus flatten me out? No. I don’t think I’d ever wear mine with a t-shirt, because then I might feel this way, that I was “flattened out.” With anything, its really just about knowing how to wear these the right wear and with the right kind of clothes. And at ten bucks, it’s worth experimenting.

Shopper’s Block? Never When it Comes to Shoes

Posted August 27, 2009 by desiree
Found in: Shoes, Deal of the Day

I have found that lately, I’m not only having writer’s block, but a shopper’s block as well. I can’t seen to find anything that I’ve been lusting over lately. I don’t know whether its that I’m working in a clothing store again and I’m on shopping burnout mode, or that my personality has just began to value shopping for my home over shopping for my wardrobe. I cannot stop buying things for the house! It’s my latest vice and has been this last year of living in my new apartment. I’ve completely indulged home-wise, splurging on backyard plants and cacti, bedding and fabric for curtains I made myself, and today…my latest binge? New hand towels for my bathroom, lovely soaps, a lovely sea foam green chenille bath mat, and of course…smelly candles in pretty vintage jars. What can I say. I am a sucker for home stuff. Deals? Sure, on some of it. But clothing deals are what I should be on the hunt for. When out at the shops recently, it wasn’t clothes I was pulling at and pricing, it was shoes. I’m good on clothes right now, it’s shoes that I almost need…and of course, want. Besides, right now is the weird in between time when it’s not quite end of summer, but not quite beginning of fall. The transitional time with weird color schemes and styles that are almost too warm to wear right now. Instead, we’ll focus on feet today. As usual, I found two pairs that I liked. One will be an instant hit, the other will take some thought and consideration. Now, at a first glance, this shoe may seem really hideous to many of you…

Gentle Souls ‘Dancin’ Jazz Oxford on sale for $133.90

But when you give it some thought and really try to picture it on your foot, it’s not so bad. I wasn’t sure about the ’slingback’ look on an oxford style shoe, but they are a great color, a classic color. Envision this shoe, with no socks, and a pretty floral dress. Mixing feminine with boyish looking pieces has been a hit all season and isn’t going away any time soon. I would actually wear these with some shorts, and and silky camisole or blouse, something delicate on top for balance.
My second faves were these chunky heels by BCBGirls…

BCBGirls ‘Edmund’ Sandal on sale for $64.90

I chose these sandals because I first off immediately liked the colors. The mix of nude and carmel brown is sure to match most dresses and color schemes, and the open toe would be fun to pair with black tights and a miniskirt.

Crop Tops? Yes, They are Back

Posted August 21, 2009 by desiree
Found in: Deal of the Day

Along with every other throwback to the 80’s, crop tops have made a comeback believe it or not. Neon is another one, but that is probably my least favorite trend that’s been forecasted for the upcoming months. Checked out a Marc Jacobs storefront lately? Neon everywhere. I guess I’m just too into everything earthy to embrace those brights. They just don’t feel fall to me…I think Fall and I think warm knits, cozy corduroy, and soft scarves. Perhaps that’s just the hopeless romantic in me…the hopeless romantic is also wishing I could slink around in one of these crop tops with no qualms about revealing my stomach, but that’s not the case. Instead, I thought of some other creative ways to wear this without having to look like I just stepped out of an episode of “Saved by the Bell”.

We The Free Lace Back Tee $29.95,

This lace back top normally retails in the store for $58, and it’s new for fall. Suddenly it’s on sale for $29.95 which I think is a much better price for such a small piece of clothing. The cotton is a washed black so it looks very 90’s, very grunge. And with that ivory lace on the back? It’s good 90’s, cute 90’s that can be layered in a million different ways and worn really well. This top comes right above mid-waist and looks perfect underneath a high-waisted jumper, which will cover up the rest of your stomach and reveal only the tiniest bit of skin in the back. Unless, of course, you are a fan of sit-ups and like revealing yours, than I encourage you to embrace that of course. This top would look great with high-waisted jeans of course, but even those won’t cover up the excess skin, especially those with a longer torso. Okay, so experiment with the high waisted and crop top, but don’t forget that this top would look great underneath a stretchy black dress, over the knee socks, and boots or platforms. I saw a cute gal last week in a pair of harem pants and a crop top just like this one. She had her stomach revealed and looked great, but she was tiny and toned. She topped with a little hat and sandals. This top can also be worn over a tank, or tube, and paired with some skinny cords and ankle boots. Whichever way you decide to layer it, this top is something fun and a little more daring than your average knit.

Finding Fall: An Easy Transitional Piece

Posted August 14, 2009 by desiree
Found in: Deal of the Day

Finding transitional fall pieces isn’t as difficult as you’d think. Layering is the important thing to keep in mind, when considering your outfits. And although Labor Day hasn’t even come to mark the official end of summer, it is in fact approaching…sadly. Back-to-school season is here and retailers are shipping out the loads of early fall statement pieces. The thought of a black sweater coat right now makes me cringe, but come winter, and I’ll be singing a different tune. How do you find transitional pieces, where do you find them, and how much are they going to run are all important questions that may come to mind. If you scope out your favorite store right now you may see some typical back-to-school items including cotton button down Henley’s, super skinny jeans, and oversized knits. The basics are easy to layer with, and a good price range to stay within for these things is definitely under $100. No one likes paying too much for basics. I don’t at least. A long sleeved cotton shirt with a little bit of lycra in it should not be priced at $68. These things usually go on sale anyway come November, or you can go to a mall and find a deal like 2 for $48 or something like that. Stores that come to mind for finding these pieces are probably the same that come to yours: the Gap, J.Crew, and sometimes even Target.

    Here is my pick:

    J. Crew

    Deep V-neck Soft Tee $36.50, jcrew.com

I like the deep v-neck on a long sleeved shirt. It’s sexy without being overbearing. The price isn’t too bad, but I would rather pay $18 for something this simple. If the price doesn’t matter, pairing this with your outfits is simple. Wear with jeans, work slacks, layer with a vest and thin scarf. Tuck it into a high waisted skirt and top with a cropped jacket. Wear with leggings and an oversized button down sweater. Basics like this are really perfect for wearing under cute rompers or jumpers you wore all summer, an easy transitional piece awaits in your closet. Of course combine these outfits with soft knit hats, dark slim denim, and boots. All of the good accessories that make dressing for fall truly fun and creative. As much as I love the color I chose for the v-neck, realistically I would probably choose a navy, black or gray. Boring, I know–but it saves the trouble of wishing to have that basic black long sleeve when you need it the most. You will thank yourself later.

Dangly Earring Deal: A Great choice for the Season

Posted July 29, 2009 by desiree
Found in: Jewelry, Deal of the Day

It’s always a great time to wear dangly earrings. Why would you not? BUT, summer really feels like the right time to wear them, since its hot, and you can put your hair up and your dangly earrings can fall right above your bare, suntanned shoulders. There are some types of dangly’s meant for summer, and some that are meant for fall, winter and spring. The ones I’ve pick today…which are on sale for an excellent price are definitely summer time material.

Cara Accessories Beaded Chandelier Earrings originally priced at $28, on sale now for $15.90

These are a great deal. Earrings like this will last if you take care of them, unfortunately the base metal that’s used to make these will eventually start to change color if exposed to certain elements like salt, sweat, and heat. So, if you’re planning to wear them on your next night out on the town or with the girls at the club…go for it, but they may tarnish after a few times of this. Either way, 16 bucks is not a bad price for such a lovely accessory. What to wear these with…anything really. Of course, as I’ve mentioned before, I am a big fan of the dangly earrings with hair up in a bun, and a soft cotton t-shirt and shorts. No heels, usually sneakers, boots or flat sandals. If you want to wear them in a more feminine way, a white sundress would pair lovely with these. It doesn’t have to be white though, any old sundress would look good with these earrings because they aren’t too flashy. My favorite part about these, and what drew me to them at first glance was the square-like shape these earrings fall in. I like the thin wire and chains that were used, and that shade of turquoise that the beads are in is one of my favorites. They are simple, but yet detailed just enough to be the only accessory you’d need for the day or night. The reason I wouldn’t wear these in fall or winter is because the earrings just look too summery for me. Fall and winter is darker–you are wearing more layers of clothing, and a lot of hoop earrings come back, or just simple drop bead/jewel earrings are good enough accessory to wear. Pretty, chandelier earrings like these should be saved for spring, and summer.

Nanette Lepore: Little Red Dress Deal

Posted July 21, 2009 by desiree
Found in: Deal of the Day

I’ve never been a huge fan or follower of Nanette Lepore, I do like some of her designs though. They are very feminine, girly, sexy, flirty and most of the time…flattering.  I haven’t really tried any of Lepore’s separates (capris, camis, blouses, etc), but I DO like her dresses.  A dress fiend myself, my eye is drawn to the patterns, and colors she picks and uses in her dress designs.  Nanette Lepore also has created a few versions of wonderful smelling perfume in pretty little light pink floral bottles.  Good fragrance, great look. What is is about Nanette that makes everything she creates and designs inexplicably eye catching? Her look is distinct, even down to the little french looking font she uses in her signature label. And after browsing her website, I took note of the fact that every piece of clothing she makes is a bright, bold color, or a fetching floral print. Making use of fabrics that include silk, linen, and cotton, the clothing is soft and flowy, draping well where it needs to.

Nanette Lepore In the Wild Dress on sale for $149.90, originally $375

The first thing I liked about this dress was its cut.  The v-neck top is always flattering, and I love the way it is fitted on top around the waist and then flares out slightly around the hips.  There is also a great little gathered piece in the front that hangs a bit longer.  The print is my most favorite part by far though, I am a sucker for red and this shade is perfect.

I found this red dress on the Saks Fifth Avenue website for a great price.  Finding any top desingner items for under $150 is a pretty good find.  However, I did find tons of cute sale stuff on nanettelepore.com, prices were more or less the same, but the selection was fabulous!  I found geometric rompers, sea foam floral tunics, and butterfly print silks, mostly for under $170.  It’s a hit or miss sometimes with the department store sites I feel. You will either find plenty of great designer stuff for inexpensive prices, and most of these sites will give you either free shipping, or an additional discount depending on what sort of sale is in effect.  Designers’ own sites work a little differently.  The discount may not be as generous on the clothing, but the selection may be more satisfying.

Top 3 Summer Skirts on Sale!

Posted July 16, 2009 by desiree
Found in: Deal of the Day

What better time to shop summer sales then now!  Today the heat was sweltering, and after doing an overkill on my favorite cut off jean shorts, I decided to wear a skirt.  But the heat was relentless!!  I was watching people walk by in jeans, and even saw a dude in jeans, a black t-shirt and long sleeved plaid flannel.  Yuck.  Today, I couldn’t have been more thankful for my little red skirt, and that got me thinking that skirts are really one of my favorite things to wear all summer long.  They’re easy to wear, will usually keep you cool, and are stylish and great for pairing with really plain things like cami’s, tanks, and tees.  After browsing around to see what kind of summer skirts are out there, I took note that the really summery ones are all on sale!  Have you shoppers out there noticed that yet?  Early summer lines are now getting marked down at stores everywhere.  Mid summer is the time to start clearing out the warm weather stuff as the early fall lines arrive in bits and pieces.  So, thanks to the sale, some of these summer skirts are as low as $13!!

Leifsdottir Rope Circle Print Skirt $78.90

This cotton skirt is a whimsical little piece that would be great for casual wear, as well as throwing on to wear to the office for a more work appropriate ensemble.  The pencil cut of it is chic, and the rope print adds a bit of fun in the mix.  This would be great with a v-neck t-shirt, white or heather gray.  Pairing with ballet flats, or flat sandals would be perfect and in the evening or air conditioned office, you can top with a cropped jacket, jean jacket (which are very IN this year), or little cardigan sweater.

Lush Pocket Skirt (Orange Print) $13.90

Cute pattern, cut like a mini and made out of soft jersey cotton.  Oh yeah, and it’s only 13 bucks, what a deal!  The waistband is smocked elastic which means an extra comfy fit for you, and the pockets are angled…kind of making it look like a very popular American Apparel cotton mini skirt that came in solid colors.  This one will be cheaper.

    Chaudry Tiered Skirt $37.90

Ok, so this skirt might me a little too boho for you BUT, its not a bad price for an item that can be doubled as a mini dress.  The waistband on this cotton skirt is again, smocked elastic, something which will stretch and allow you to pull it up as a tube dress, then belt it in the middle.  There you have it, a pretty, flowy skirt transformed into a cute dress.  Easy as pie!
