Pregnancy is a special time in a woman's life. There's no way to verbally describe how beautiful a pregnant woman looks. The best way to capture the true essence of prenatal beauty, is to have a professional photo taken to commemorate such a life changing event.

You've probably seen your fair share of celebrity photos, proudly displaying a bare preggo tummy in all it's glory. I've always found these pictures to be an appealing way to celebrate the moment, but it wasn't really the style for me.

If you're not sold on the scantily clad photo, there are so many elegant or fun ways to have your pictures done, you're sure to find the right style for you.

Sitting cross-legged on the floor

Standing with your arms cradling your tummy

Close up profile of your belly

Standing with a large ribbon tied around your stomach (if you know the gender, you can choose pink or blue, or you can keep it a secret with red, yellow or purple)

Standing with your partner or children kissing your tummy

Bare-bellied with your hands on your stomach

Sitting with the babies older siblings resting their heads on your belly

Sitting with the babies older siblings resting their heads on your belly

If you still aren’t sure what will work best for you, experiment with your photographer. Chances are, he or she has taken a bajillion pregnancy pics and will be able to suggest several wonderful poses to choose from.

To get the most out of your belly shot here are some helpful hints:

Be comfortable. Make a trip to the bathroom before you sit down and wear clothes that’s easy to move in

Take advantage of natural light. Natural light offers a softer more appealing glow to your picture

Don’t wear maternity clothes. If you’re not going to show a ton of skin, opt for a form-fitting shirt to get the best silhouette. The whole point of the picture is to show off your midsection

Time it right. Schedule your photo session around 30 weeks. You’ll be plenty pregnant without being too terribly uncomfortable

Keep your makeup, clothing and background simple. The focus should be your pregnancy

Have fun with your photo shoot, it’s an opportunity to shine in a way that only an expectant mother can. Pregnancy is the beginning of something beautiful, and you’ll treasure these pictures for the rest of your life.

Recently I was in a TopShop in Ireland, a fabulous store that I have always considered a trendy mix of Urban Outfitters and American Apparel with a bit of crazy European flair thrown in. Harem pants and full-own jumpsuits in polka dot flowered materials are standard, as are impossible high-heeled Timberland boots and lacy leggings that come in no bigger than a size six off the rack. So I was surprised when I wandered through to the second floor of the store, and ended up in the maternity clothes area!

I was impressed by the effort, but also a bit in shock: TopShop seems for the most part to create clothes that would be super unflattering for anyone over a size six. But here we were, harem pants and jumpsuits in all, a maternity section, with extra fabric and elasticity built in at the waist to give expecting mothers the little extra wiggle room.

It was interesting to witness: besides the TopShop maternity section, there were also plenty of boutiques for maternity leave, which had all sorts of pampering goodies like herbal foot massage oil, fluffy heating pad covers, silky nighties, and robes.

I realized later that Ireland has special maternity laws, which allow expecting mothers to take up to 22 weeks off of work, fully paid, in the time before and after the pregnancy. They are allowed to leave at max 14 weeks before the due date so that they can continue to rest and relax at home with the remaining paid weeks of leave. ThatÂ’s very generous! And with all of that extra time before the baby is expected, soon-to-be mothers must have a little more cash on their hands and want to give themselves a treat. Of course these stores, like TopShop and all the special boutiques, also had a section of baby clothes, but it was just an periphery section: the mother is the real show.

Which is how it should be!
