For a long time (and still today), people are stuck in this belief that if you spend more on something, it’s better than something you spend less on. But I am here to tell you that this theory is wrong. At least, most of the time. I’d certainly never in good conscience spend $20 on a refrigerator.

For a while, I thought I was crazy. All those lessons of thrifty spending and clever bargaining tricks from my mother were just her cheap, cruel ways. And then the Internet happened, and everything became clearer. There are so many sites these days, selling foundation, eye shadow, lip balm and the like, all for ridiculously low prices.

Can’t find your favorite brand for a cheap price? Look again. Sites like TotalBeauty.com and HauteLook.com are amazing resources for coupons, deals and sometimes even free samples of products. Yes, FREE. All you have to do is have the patience to look.

And coupons aren’t the only way, either. Product line e.l.f. Makeup and Cosmetics (eyes, lips, face) have stopped being an online-only source for cheap and quality cosmetics products. Go into your nearest Target or Wal-Mart, and there they’ll be, shiny and illuminated alongside your favorite CoverGirl and L’Oréal products.

E.l.f. has become my favorite source for great, inexpensive products, even brushes, eyelash curlers and the like. For a small, typically $8 container of eye shadow, e.l.f. charges $1. Same with brushes, lipstick and other great cosmetics. Too lazy to go to the store? E.l.f. is still online, with minimal shipping charges and an extremely well organized site.

TotalBeauty.com is honestly my favorite guilty pleasure beauty site. Alongside celebrity news, you can enter to win dozens of online contests for free cosmetics products and also learn about the newest product releases from your favorite lines. Honestly, I don’t know why people wouldn’t go to this site.

In the end, you just have to know that with some patience and a can-do attitude. Whether you’re used to spending a lot or skilled in spending a little, this search can be fun. Have a weekend contest with your girlfriends. See who can find the same product for the cheapest. The losers buy that product for the winner.
