Let’s be real: No one feels like doing their hair every single day. It’s so time consuming. It’s such a pain. It’s just not fun on a day to day basis. But if you have oily hair, you might feel like you have to re-style your tresses every morning. You might think if you don’t, people will think you never take a shower! If that sounds like you, I was totally in your shoes a little while back.
One day, I realized that my hair was getting obnoxiously oily. I got out of the shower, blew my hair dry and realized I already had shine at my roots already. After twenty minutes. I had to break out my dry shampoo immediately! The next time I showered, I tried a new shampoo. Didn’t help. So next, I tried a new hair dryer. (I was skeptical of its effectiveness, because mine claimed to “add shine,” which I obviously did not want!) Nada. Nothing worked. I was completely frustrated.
I happened to mention my little hair issue to my aunt, who had a suggestion. “I have this shampoo at home that really dried out my hair. I wasn’t a fan, but I’ll bring it for you. Try it.”
She did bring it to me. I tried it out. And miracles ensued. It took all the shine away.
So, what is the miracle product I use? Pantene Flat to Volume Shampoo for Fine Hair. Why does it work so darn well? For starters, I do not have fine hair. I have very thick hair. From what I’ve gathered, many products targeted at medium or thick hair do not have a system to remove excess oil. Some even seem to have ingredients to smooth, shine and combat frizz. This is terrible if you have oily hair already. This involves adding more oil-like agents into the mix. It will just exacerbate the problem.
Products for fine hair, like my beloved Pantene shampoo, tend to work against different problems. A big complaint for fine hair is that it falls flat. So, hair products targeting fine hair tend to build volume at the roots. Take it from the Pantene website. This is how they do it:
“Pantene’s customized formula works to remove oil, which weighs fine hair down. Micro-boosters add rigidity and firmness to prepare fine hair’s structure to hold voluminous styles all day.”
Bottom line? If you have oily locks, you need a shampoo that will remove oil. It’s just that simple. Maybe not for volumizing purposes, but to nix the shine. So if you have medium or thick hair and have excess oil, and are on a drugstore budget for shampoo, think about using a product for fine hair. Then, follow with a fantastic conditioner on the ends, one that adds moisture, and you’re as good as gold. Problem: Solved.
