I spent a little time looking at cosmetics this past weekend, because I was in need of a major beauty-drawer overhaul. I scoured some magazines, spent ample time in the aisles of Target, Ulta and Sephora, and started gathering up some purchases. I found out something about myself:
I kind of have an obsession with raspberry-colored products.
I inadvertently purchased raspberry-colored nail polish from Essie, raspberry-colored lip gloss from L’Oreal, and raspberry-colored lipstick from Revlon. As you may or may not know, I am a girl who hates to “match.” I like cohesion, but matchy-matchy style is just not my thing. So, imagine my horror when so many of my products were almost exactly the same shade across several different brands. Basically, I had a few choices with my beauty loot.
1) Take some of that raspberry-colored goodness back to the store (but it was so pretty!); 2) Avoid wearing them together at all costs; 3) Just go for it and wear some of that stuff together.
Since I really didn’t want to take anything back, and since I don’t have the mental capacity to worry about all things in life and keeping matchy hues away from each other, I decided to just go for it. And guess what, people?
It looked good! My nails and my pout stood out even more, because the super-similar hues played off of each other. I’ve been wearing my lipstick (sometimes with a touch of that gloss over top), and the polish for the past couple of days now. And as long as you follow these few quick tips, it will go swimmingly:
1) Choose your best color! If you’re going to go over-the-top with a color, it better be a color you look fabulous in. Am I right? You’re guaranteed to score a hit if you choose your best shade. I found out the color clash of the deep raspberry against my currently pale skin looks very cool. For an easy way to do this, start with a lip shade you know looks good on you, and find the matching polish at the store afterward.
2) Don’t overdo it. I say stick with lips and nails. If you start getting cheeks into the picture, and then eye color, etc., etc., you won’t get the desired effect. Pick two locations and rock it.
3) Be bold. Pale colors are fine, but if you’re going to go for it… go big! Choose deep colors that stand out, and probably in the pink/red family. Raspberry, peachy orange, mahogany, fire-engine red and hot pink are all great options.
And lastly, if you need anymore validation, I saw in a magazine early in the week that matching your nails and lips is a beauty “do” this season. So…what are you waiting for?!
Will you work the matching nail/lip color trend?
