Trend Spotlight: Jazz Age Glam

Let’s look ahead. Way, way ahead… but back at the same time. Confused? Allow me to explain.

The Spring 2012 shows debuted a couple of months ago, and one of the fun trends was something totally retro: 20′s glamour. Great Gatsby-inspired garb. Jazz Age glam. And maybe I’m jumping the gun to warm weather a bit, but it’s only because we can take this trend and make it holiday appropriate.

Want to be the belle of the ball this Christmas season? Here are a few 20′s-style looks for winter (and eventually spring!):

Dramatic neckline. Show off your super-feminine collarbone with a neckline that tastefully dips into a V. This really works best for smaller chests (count me out!), but if you have a larger chest you can modify the trend by making the cut a scoop-neck. V-necklines were seen on the runway at Etro, Dior, YSL and Giorgio Armani, while models worked scoop necks at Oscar de la Renta, Derek Lam and Gucci. Consider adding subtle body shimmer to your chest and shoulders for an extra beauty touch!

Flapper fringe. A fringed dress will instantly evoke 20′s glam, and it’s perfect for the party season. Don’t overdo it, though! Keep the color palette subtle: blacks, golds, silvers. Can’t go wrong with the holiday neutrals. Then, accessorize with a few key pieces: a colorful necklace, clutch and heels to create a pop of color.

Sequins, feathers, glitz. Decadent, indulgent… All that shimmers is a perfect nod to the Jazz Age. Sequined dresses with opaque tights and ankle boots can be New Year’s Eve go-tos. Or feather accents on a simple LBD? Totally gorgeous (see: Oscar de la Renta and Fendi). The holidays are a time to have fun and wear fabrics and elements you can’t wear everyday. Take advantage!

Shift silhouette. The classic, long-ish shift dress is the ultimate 20′s piece, and perfect for your parties this year. It’s comfortable, but not overdone. It can be covered in sequins or a simple neutral. You can add tons of accents or just let the piece speak for itself. And it’s a silhouette that looks good on everyone. (Tall? Hem just below the knee. Petite? Hem just above the knee.) So, don’t let the opportunity to invest in a great dress pass you by.

Do you like the 1920′s-glam trend as a holiday option?
