5 Signs It’s Time to Get Rid of “That”

You know that item in your closet you always see, but never wear? What about the old favorite you’re afraid to throw away? (It does feel a bit like betrayal, doesn’t it?) How about that amazing sparkly dress that’s just one size too tight right now? Or the piece that might come back in style?

How does one make decisions in this mess, decide what to keep and what to toss? If you’re stumped every time you attempt to clean out your closet, allow me to help. Here are five signs it’s time to toss “that” in the trash, or donate.

GET RID OF IT:

…If you didn’t wear it last season either. If you see a sweater you haven’t worn since last season or this season, and it comes time to decide whether to donate it or store it away, donate it. If two seasons have passed without you wearing that item, you won’t wear it next season either.

…If it was an impulse buy. You know. You thought magenta was “your color.” You thought you’d totally have an occasion to wear that crazy fur-sweater thing. You assumed you’d still love that micro-micro-mini skirt at home… We all have moments of fashion insanity. Consider this an invitation to forgive yourself and move on with your stylish life.

…If you’re saving it for “after your diet.” When you lose weight, you’re going to have another incredible piece calling out for you from the store window, demanding you treat yourself. Unless it’s really, really amazing, it’s time to give it away.

…If it’s not a “classic” trend. Classic trends are things like leather, fur, camel, one-shoulder silhouettes. Even if they’re not in style this season, they will no doubt be in style again in the near future. Truly trendy items that you’d find on the racks of your favorite stores and filter in and out with the seasons never to be seen again… yeah. It was good for a season, but it’s not going to be around next season. Get rid of it.

…If you’re not crazy about it! I know this sounds so self-explanatory, but it really isn’t. How many “meh” items do you keep lying around in your drawers and in your closet? I’m willing to bet it’s a lot. If you don’t truly love it, you’re never going to reach for it. If these pieces are still in great shape, take them to a consignment shop. Put the money you earn for those ten “meh” pieces toward three really amazing pieces. I guarantee you’ll get more wear out of those.
