5 Tips for Guarding Your Style Against the Elements

It’s cold in my neck of the woods today. Cold and rainy. Yuck. What’s worse? I didn’t realize it before leaving the house this morning.

Yesterday it was a gorgeous 65-degree fall day, with tons of sun to boot. Today, as I frantically got my things together and ran out the door, I didn’t see the looming dark clouds outside. I dressed terribly, and now I am cold and wet. Boo!

There are some things I should have done to guard my style. To keep you from my sad fate, I thought I’d share them. Make sure you use these tips next time it’s raining, sleeting, hailing, snowing or all of the above.

1. You should build your outfit around footwear. One of the worst things in the world is walking around with cold, wet feet. Avoid this! Plan your footwear for rain (wellies) or snow (lined snow boots), and then build the rest of your outfit around your choice of shoe. You can’t go wrong with thick leggings and an oversize sweater, along with a colorful scarf and gloves. It’s a go-to look when working these types of boots.

2. Wear a long coat. You should have a coat that hits around the knee, covering most of your outfit. The thought is that the boots will hit at about the same place, and you’ll stay dry. I have a warm utility coat I wear all winter to keep me safe from the elements, and a trench coat for the fall. Black down coats will also work great as protection from snow and rain.

3. Fill a make-up bag. Leave it in your car. There’s a good chance that if you’re walking throw a snow/rain shower, your make-up will get a little destroyed. I always pack the essential with me: a great powder foundation to combat any running make-up. Two other great items? A small tube of mascara and a tube of chapstick. If you dab away oil and redefine your eyes and lips, any other weather-induced flaws will be hardly noticeable.

4. Carry a hat… and a hair tie. Pull your hair into a sleek ponytail if you can’t easily fix flyaways and frizz. If all else fails, throw on a neutral hat (you can keep it tucked away in your car) that goes with any outfit. I like a black bowler cap, which can go either polished or casual.

5. Get an umbrella in a print. Obviously, you need an umbrella! But who wants a boring old black or navy one? If the weather is nasty, give your mood a lift with a fun umbrella in a leopard print, heart pattern, or polka dots. I love this Marc by Marc Jacobs Yo Yo Dot Rain Tote and Umbrella in bright red. How pretty would this look against a black trench and wellies?!

What are your rain/snow essentials?

Those are great tips!!! It’s best to be prepared since the weather has been unpredictable lately… it’d be such a bummer to have our outfits completely destroyed because of it! :)
