Personally, I think fur is tough to wear. (Of course, I always advocate a great faux fur, but for the sake of this blog post, I am just going to call it “fur.”) But designers took it a step further this season and dipped their furs in a rainbow of colors. There was red at Prabal Gurung, violet at Missoni, teal at Prada and Diane von Furstenberg, cotton-candy pink at Sonia Rykiel and Emanuel Ungaro, blush at Valentino, and a color I’d call “hot-pink plum” at Gucci.
Needless to say, the runways were literally covered in fur and drenched in color. If you’re balking just thinking if this trend is even wearable, fret not. I think it can be…with a few tips.
1. Streamline, streamline, streamline. With a piece this bold, there’s no need to infuse your look with tons of other trends. Keep it classic. A skinny pencil skirt or maxi skirt are a great ways to go, as well as tailored trousers. A blouse on top or a silk tee in a neutral will also work wonders.
2. Be careful with monochrome. Monochrome is a trend that was often paired with fur on the runway, but it does not translate well into real life. Unless you like to look like a giant ball of cotton candy. Or Elmo. I assume you don’t… so unless you’re feeling absolutely positive about that all red or pink outfit, go with basic black, white, brown or navy as a base. Can’t go wrong there.
3. Accessorize strategically. If your fur jacket is thin enough, you can layer a belt over it to add some curves (a la Prabal Gurung). If your fur is just a shrug, grab a statement bag in the same shade. If your coat has short or three-quarter sleeves, a pair of elbow-length gloves in the winter or a bold bangle in the fall are perfect options. All fur will look chic with a pair of booties. Just remember: When in doubt, keep it no fuss.
What are your thoughts on this colorfully cozy trend? Will you be wearing a chromatic fur coat or vest this winter?
