Ask Belinda: Fall 2011 Fabric Trends

The Question:

Dear Belinda,

Now that we’ve put away our summer outfits and started to enter the fall season, what are some of the must-have fall fabrics to consider?

Thanks,

Emma

Belinda Says…

Hi Emma,

As much as I hate to admit that I’m a  little excited for cooler weather (I’m a sunshine and sand Cali girl to the core!), I’m definitely looking forward to some of the luxe fabrics we’ll be wearing this season. The Fall 2011 runways did not hold back on being cozy so, with that in mind, let’s look at my favorite fabrics for fall (and winter!)…

Velvet. This elegant fabric has made a serious comeback and it’s definitely one you’ll want to pick up. From tailored blazers to sophisticated frocks, velvet is not only luxe but perfect for keeping you warm in these chilly days.

Leather. This is a fabric that seems to come and go in the style department, but this year it’s definitely in! I’ve been seeing a lot of black leather skirts — high-waisted and just above the knee to sassy minis — and pants. Of course there’s always the classic leather jacket, but you can add a little edge to your look with any one of these great leather pieces.

Knits. It doesn’t get cozier than a knitted sweater, if you ask me. Luckily, not only will wearing knits this fall be functional, but will be on-trend as well! Go for chunky knits and oversized pieces such as a sweater or open cardigan, as well as feminine pieces like skirts and dresses, cinched at the waist with a skinny belt for definition. And, of course, don’t forget about a trusty knitted scarf and beret!

Fur. The runways went wild with fur for Fall 2011, so you can expect to find furry pieces — whether the real deal or faux — at the shops. If you don’t feel brave enough to wear a full-on furred coat or even a vest, get in on the trend with small fur accents in other clothing items and accessories.

Sheer. Lastly, while most of the fall fabric trends are heavy and very warm, the runways also kept things light and sexy with sheer pieces. Go for a chic look with a sheer blouse tucked into high-waisted pants or skirt, and layer a cozy jacket or cardigan over it for contrast and dimension.

Happy stylin’!
