The minimalism of the past couple seasons? It’s still around. But added into the mix is a whole lot of color, which makes for a sophisticated blend of subdued pieces and extreme hues. Adding different shades into your look isn’t too hard–just think of it as coloring for adults.
For fall, red was a huge winner on the runways, as were jade and teal. Shots of sunny yellow against a black canvas was another look of the season, and magenta and sapphire round out the best of the best. The one thing that’s thoroughly consistent though? All colors are striking, sharp and perfect to add into your look without having to recreate your wardrobe.
First, think about accessories. When you’re shopping for autumn, look for extras that will stand out against the backdrop of an LBD or with your white-shirt-and-slacks office attire. Look for a necklace with large beads to dress up an outfit, or some pretty drop earrings to draw attention to your face. When it comes to your jacket, a must-have for any gray or black coat is a scarf in a bold hue–choose red, deep blue or magenta to stand out on the street.
Second, think separates. When you’re working with a bold color, sometimes, it’s easy to think: Let’s just buy a dress! A simple shift in one color will be easy to accessorize. In reality, if you buy a pencil skirt and top, you’ll be able to mix and match and get much more mileage out of both pieces. So I’d advise buying one tailored dress in a striking color like red, sapphire or emerald, and then work in separates. Blouses, skirts, structured tops, pants and even tights in solid hues can be color-blocked or worn with basic black or white.
Last, think about make-up. Don’t forget — pretty colors weren’t just clothing staples this season, they were also cosmetic essentials. If you’re feeling fun, throw a couple of bold shades into your eye make-up routine. Blues and greens were big runway favorites, and can also work in real life, too. Choose a deep blue shadow for the top lid and a lime green liner for the bottom. Daring look, but easier than you think to pull off! Wear with confidence… If you’re not as into this idea, then you can never go wrong with a cherry or bright pink pout.
Happy coloring!
