Do you know my golden beauty rule? Because I totally have one. And it’s this: Play up your lips or your eyes, never both.
Here’s what I mean by that. I’m not saying that if you’re putting on lip gloss with a slight hint of pink, you should avoid anything on your eyes. Or even that you shouldn’t wear a little color in both places. What I’m getting at is to avoid dramatic looks in both places at once. It’s distracting. So, as a basic rule, the more bold your lip shade, the less striking your eyes should be, and vice versa.
Lucky for us, dramatic eyes and lips are both hot this fall. And apart from on the runway, there’s a time and place for both. Here’s your mini-guide to deciding when (and how) to wear each.
Think of the time of day, and plan color accordingly. When in doubt, the earlier in the day, the more toned-down your look should be. You probably aren’t going to rock a full-on smoky eye at 8:30 in the morning. That being said, you can get away with more on the lip color earlier in the day, as long as you stay within the pink family: a deep shade of magenta or mahogany can take you into the afternoon. At night, play up those eyes or lips! For going out on the town, I’d do a great cat, colored or smoky eye. For a formal event, I like a bold red lip.
Your activity matters. If you’re going to work, then I’d suggest simple brown/thin black liner and mascara for the eyes, and a light gloss or nude hue on your lips. That being said, I think you can get a bit more daring when it comes to your pout, but if you choose a red/deep pink/mahogany tone, you should just wear mascara on your peepers and call it a day. If you’re headed somewhere you’ll be moving around, like a sporting event or charity fundraiser, keep it simple with a couple coats of mascara and chapstick. First date? You can’t go wrong with black liner and a subtle lip hue–just enough to play up your natural color. Second, third and fourth dates? Mix it up with bold lips and eyes.
Remember the temperature! Finally, don’t forget to plan your beauty routine around the temperature. The hotter the day, the less make-up you’re going to want to sport…pretty much anywhere. You don’t want to sweat off your charcoal-shimmer eyeshadow. If it’s blazing hot, just choose a little gloss and mascara and leave it at that. Save the dramatics for full-on fall weather.
