The Question:
Dear Belinda,
I will be entering my first year of college next month and have been anxiously preparing for dorm life. I have the basics to outfit my dorm room, but when it comes to my wardrobe, I’m stumped. What clothes should I take to college?
Sincerely,
Hailey J.

Belinda Says…
Dear Hailey,
Ahh…college. What an exciting beginning! The next four years will be a time of discovery and growth, in more ways than one, including your personal style. However, it’s important to start out with the basics. One thing to consider is the amount of space (or lack thereof) you will have in your dorm closet. So it’s best to build your college wardrobe with interchangeable separates that can be worn over again in more ways than one. Here are the absolute must-haves for your college wardrobe:
Jeans. Whether you’re headed to class or grabbing a burger with friends after the game, a great pair of jeans can take you from point A to point B. Four pairs should be more than enough, with at least one of them in a dark wash.
Solid Tops. From long sleeves to tank tops, v-necks to crew necks, you’ll want to have a nice assortment of solid-colored tops to wear with all your outfits. Basic colors like black, white, navy and gray are essential, but don’t forget to spruce up your wardrobe with a few colorful tops as well.
Sweaters. The first on your list is a basic black cardigan – it can be buttoned up or worn open and layered over just about anything! Next, you’ll want to get yourself a couple of classic pullovers to wear for the extra cool seasons on campus. Note: Depending where your college is, don’t forget to bring a warm coat for the extra cold winters!
Dresses. Just like the black cardi, you simply cannot live without a little black dress. This will come in handy for club/sorority socials or other special occasions. Pick a simple silhouette that can serve as the perfect canvas for colorful or minimalistic accessories. Secondly, a casual frock such as a shirtdress or classic floral dress is perfect for those days you’re not feeling your jeans.
Business Casual Attire. For those class presentations, career fairs and interviews, you’re going to need to look the part. A classic white button down is easily mixed-and-matched with a pencil skirt or slacks and fitted blazer. Choose basic colors like black, dark gray and navy for your business casual separates.
Shoes. Chances are you’ll be walking a lot around campus, so it’s important to bring comfortable shoes with you. The first are your basic flats. These will be your go-to whether you’re wearing jeans or casual dress. Secondly, athletic shoes (for those morning jogs or after-class workouts). Lastly, bring a pair of nice pumps to go with your LBD and business casual attire.
I wish you great success in your college career, Hailey! : )
Happy Stylin’,
Belinda
