It’s that time of the week again, dear readers…Do’s & Don’ts Wednesday! Today I want to dive into one of the year’s most popular colors: White. This fresh tone is perfect for the warm days of summer and has made a serious comeback thanks to the spring 2011 runways. There are many ways to wear white, but I have the definite musts (and faux pas’) of wearing this crisp and minimalistic color (or lack thereof).
DO: Get yourself a LWD. The Little White Dress, or LWD, has solidified it’s place in the classic wardrobe department. It’s the breezy alternative to the LBD and, just like it’s black counterpart, sets the perfect canvas for colorful accessories and shimmering baubles. If you have not gotten one yet, what are you waiting for? Go now!
DON’T: Go white from head-to-toe. As chic as it may seem and tempting to try, don’t. Dressing yourself in white from top to bottom runs the risk of making you look washed out. And that is never a good look. Balance a predominantly white ensemble with soft neutrals or add a pop of bright color via accessories and shoes.
DO: Try the LWB. Didn’t we talk about this already? No, my friend. This is the LWB, also known as the little white bikini. There isn’t a swimsuit more chic than a crisp white two-piece. It’s very glam and retro-chic. Just make sure you do a see-through test before actually hitting the waves in public.
DON’T: Be afraid of white shoes. This is one of those things that are iffy but, with the right outfit, you can rock a mean pair of white heels. The trick is to not get too color-coordinated. Remember, never from head-to-toe. Just as you would use a pair of colorful wedges to unexpectedly amp up an outfit, use your white kicks in the same strategic way.
DO: White shimmery eyes. This is especially perfect for summer; using your finger, apply a little bit of frosty white shadow onto your eyelids, keeping the look light and simple. Finish off with some black mascara, clear gloss and sun-kissed cheeks.
DON’T: Forget to wear the right undergarments. There’s science behind wearing white. OK, it’s not that complicated, but there are a couple of things you should consider: 1) Never wear black or white undergarments beneath white apparel – always wear nude, and 2) Check for visibility lines. Especially if you are wearing fitted pants, check for unsightly panty lines before stepping outside.
Have you tried the minimalistic white trend? What are you favorite white must-haves for the season?
