Do’s and Don’ts: Summer Hairstyles

Happy Wednesday, dear readers! Boy, has it been toasty around here! I, for one, am happy to be back in the dry heat of California (Panama’s hot and humid weather did not agree with my hair). Nonetheless, regardless of how extreme the temperatures get, there’s no reason why your hair can’t look great. Don’t let the sun, sand, wind or anything else summer throws at you get in the way of a terrific hairdo! Luckily, there are several great style options you can sport this season. So grab your hair bands, pins and styling products, and get ready to look fabulous this summer!

DO: Go au naturel. There’s nothing more liberating than going bare-faced or letting your locks go naturally wild for a day, or two, or more. Especially in the summer. Your hair is already taking enough of the summer heat as it is, so put the heat styling tools on hitaus and embrace your hair’s natural texture. For more definition, use a sea salt spray on dry strands and scrunch for a little volume boost.

DON’T: Miss out of the ombre effect. Rather than making a few trips to the salon this summer for a root touch-up, do like many celebs (including Rachel Bilson, Alexa Chung and Drew Barrymore) and rock the ombre effect. This is where the color of your hair fades from darkest to lightest, starting at the roots, going down to the ends.

DO: Keep your hair out of your face. Having rampant strands of hair stick to your face and neck in the high heat of summer can be bothersome. Solve this annoyance with a pretty up do, like a topknot, a low bun (Goody Spin Pins are awesome!), or polished ponytail. For the latter, keep hair slicked back with some sculpting gel and the pony tail sleek with a quick pass of the flat iron and some anti-frizz spray.

DON’T: Disregard the head scarf. Turbans and head scarves were big on the runways for spring and summer, so do like a supermodel and wrap up your locks. Use a large, printed silk scarf and wrap around your head with a knot at the back. This won’t only be ultra chic, but will protect your hair from the damaging sun rays, as well.

DO: Get your braid on. The quickest, easiest way to add instant style to your locks is with a braid. For a simple and romantic look, wear a loose side braid, or tap into your playful side with the classic two braid look. For a pretty up do, part hair down the middle, creating two braids (on on each side). Then, wrap braids upwards and pin them up on top of your head. Quick, easy and oh-so-pretty.

DON’T: Forget about hair accessories! The easiest way to change up your hair do is with pretty hair accessories. Try a sleek head band (this looks great with a bun!), a pretty flower clip (great for a loose updo or side ponytails) or, a hot trend of the moment: clip-in feathers.

What’s your go-to summer hairstyle? Are there any styles you’re looking forward to trying out this season? Share!
