Between playing, watching and supporting friends and family, I’ve spent my fair share of time sitting in stands next to baseball diamonds, basketball courts, football fields, hockey rinks…
You get the picture. I’m a hardcore sports fan, y’all.
But there’s always, inevitably, a bit of a challenge when deciding what to wear to each game, with a lot to keep in mind in terms of attire. So, how about I make it simple, since I’ve tested plenty of outfits through the years. Here are some things to keep in mind when getting ready for the big game.
1. Will my chair have a back on it? If not, get comfy. It sounds like a weird question, but it isn’t. It’s all about comfort, and you have to think ahead. Having a chair seat as opposed to a backless bleacher is a big deal! If you’re sitting in a bleacher seat, you’ll probably be a little more squirmy during the whole game because your spine will be darn tired. So, add some comfort in other areas of your outfit. For example, don’t wear tight pants; choose leggings. Comfort is key. Heed this rule. (Unless you have some seriously kind spectators behind you who will graciously allow you to use their legs as a chair back… but I wouldn’t exactly count on that.
2. Do I need pockets, or can I carry a bag? I often watch my precious Michigan Wolverines take on the teams at the Big House, and they’ve got some pretty strict rules about what you can and can’t take into the 110,000+ spectator stadium. Purse? A pretty big no-no. Since I can’t bring a bag, I have purchased some super-comfy jeans with generous pockets to slide in my phone, chapstick, etc. Make sure to figure out how you’ll be carrying your essentials prior to game time.
3. What’s the weather like? For Pete’s sake, check the forecast. There’s nothing worse than being stuck at a baseball game while it’s raining, a football game while it’s freezing or a soccer game while it’s stifling and you totally wore the wrong outfit. Your motto: I will always layer.
4. It’s a date… what do I wear?! Dates are a little confusing to dress for, although I think you have leeway. Here’s how I see it, generally: Football? Hardcore. Wear your team colors or a cool jersey. Hockey? A little dressier. I like wearing my pea coat, a scarf, jeans and high-heel boots. Baseball? You’re outside, so dress for the elements. A baseball hat and braids are a cute hair option. Basketball? It’s a tie between dressed-up and dressed-down, and you can really pull off either. (If it’s a first date, I’d probably go more toward hockey attire. If not, wear the team colors, kiddos.)
5. Am I walking to the stadium/field/etc.? Don’t forget this key fact: It’s not just about the game-time attire, but you may have to walk to the field! Wear good footwear. Sandals with back-straps, like gladiator styles, are good for summer. Boots are winter’s go-to kicks. Just make sure you’ve worn your shoes before and know you can walk a ways in them!
All right, chicas… How many games do you attend in a year, and what do you wear to each sporting event?

Love this! I’ve been going to various sporting events with family for ever (I have a ton of athletic cousins!) and even though I’m not sporty by any means, but after years of this you do pick up a thing or two about what to wear.
And especially that hockey attire- so true
Great article!
