Happy Monday, friends! I hope you are enjoying your long weekend and relaxing in good company. Now that we’ve unofficially officiated summer, let’s get into warm weather mode (I know the temperatures are still a little iffy in different parts of the country) and talk about what we should be wearing this sunny season. As you know, summer is the time to bring out the sun dresses, sandals, shorts, as well as other skin-baring attire, and the one thing that could completely cramp your style is a bad case of perspiration. Yep. That’s never on trend. So to help you make better decisions when you’re out shopping for a new summer wardrobe, I’ve gathered the top summer fabrics that will help you stay cool, dry (for the most part) and comfortable while being stylishly you.
Cotton. This has been a longtime summer favorite, thanks to its lightweight and breathable attributes. There is a wide variety of cotton fabrics from which to choose, starting with traditional cotton all the way to organic and new blends. Two popular cotton weaves for the warmer months are seersucker and chambray, the latter being a lightweight, breezy alternative to denim. If you’re looking for a great sustainable summer fabric, then look for items made from bamboo, cotton, or hemp.
Linen. Cotton’s cool and sheer cousin, linen is also a summer staple. This breezy fabric is a favorite for seaside fashion including pants, capris, dresses and even men’s suits. The light, natural color of linen is ideal for staying cool in the summer sun, as well as its breathability. The only downside to linen is that it wrinkles easily, but if that’s not an issue, get your linen on!
Rayon. This blended fabric combines cotton with synthetic fibers for the best of both worlds. Rayon is soft and color-fast to the sun, heat and washing, making it’s wear life a little longer than some other fabrics. The great thing about this fabric is that it is a great conductor of heat and it is extremely absorbent, so wearing it during the summer can help one stay cool and dry.
Silk. There’s nothing lighter than silk and, thanks to its moisture-absorbing abilities, its a perfect summer fabric. Staying cool doesn’t get more luxurious than silk, however, this fabric requires special care and excessive moisture can cause the fibers of the fabric to wear out. Silk is a great choice if the weather isn’t too extreme, as well as for afternoon or evening events such as weddings and soirees.
