As I was getting ready this morning, it occurred to me that while we’ve been busy talking about which lipstick trends to try, which hats to wear and how to accessorize your wardrobe all this season, it seems that we’ve forgotten to cover one very important subject of fashion: Prom.
Ahhh…to be seventeen again…
Now, forgive me for letting it slip my mind, but it’s been ages since I last put on a prom dress. But I digress (and nevermind how old I am!). Prom season is in full swing and, for those of you who have yet to attend the biggest night of the school year, I give to you some do’s and don’ts of prom style…
DO: Get a dress if you haven’t already! What do you mean prom is this weekend and you still don’t have a dress?? Oy vey…the only thing worse than not having a prom dress on time is having to wear one you don’t like but it was the only thing you could find. Procrastination will never get you far in life – better start the good habits now!
DON’T: Spend an arm and a leg on the dress. Whaaaaa?? But it’s prom! Ok, ok – I see your point – but here me out. Instead of spending your entire savings on one dress, why not use the money you save for that awesome Euro trip with your friends after graduation? Now that party will last for at least a week. Not one night. More bang for your buck? Yes, please!
DO: Dress for your age. Who doesn’t want to look like a red-carpet celebrity on prom night? In fact, you should! But you can still look fabulously glamorous without attempting to look like you’re far older than you really are. Unless, that’s what you’re really aiming for…? Embrace your youth, it only lasts so long! Oh, to be seventeen again! Wait, did I say that already?
DON’T: Freak out if she’s wearing the same dress. Yes, I’ve seen it happen many times. Two girls wearing the same dress. Why? WHY???!! Brace yourself, dear. It’s OK – really. You may have the same dress, but you’ll both be rocking it in your own unique way. Instead, make the most of it and snap a picture together for a good laugh years down the road!
DO: Carry a pair of backup shoes. There is nothing worse than having to suffer through prom night thanks to uncomfortable heels. Let your tootsies rest with a pair of cute flats – NOT fluffy slippers or tennis shoes. You can even get a cool pair of roll-up flats that you can tuck away into your purse.
DON’T: Be a wallflower. So what if your dance moves are rusty? It’s prom! The most epic dance of all your high school years. Get out on that floor and dance the night away! You can have the perfect hair, makeup and dress, but if you’re not having a good time, then all that will just be wasted. So, in the words of Wayne Campbell, “Party on!” (I just totally dated myself, didn’t I?)
