How to Color Block

I love a trend that’s simple to master. Color-blocking is one of those trends. As long as you’re prepared to ditch any wallflower tendencies, it’s a look you’ll love for summer because it’s bright and bold. And really, you don’t have to worry all that much about the cohesion questions: “Does this match?” … “Does this top really go with this skirt?” … “I don’t know if this piece goes with this other color, does it?” No more doubting! Here are a few simple rules for color-blocking success.

#1: Only choose solid colors. You want your colors to each stand out on their own. The point is not that they match perfectly, so forget the old rules of what color goes with another. As long as the shades are noticeably different, as long as they look like “blocks,” you’re totally good. That means making sure the colors are solids. I particularly like magenta and orange together, and a blue color adds an icy touch to a warm look.

#2: Opt for a striped dress. Color blocking is made easy if you choose a frock that’s striped already. But a keep in mind: it’s only color blocked if there are actually “blocks.” (I know, duh, right? But, we all forget these things sometimes!) Keep your stripes at least six inches wide for the best effect, and avoid anything that could be classified as skinny! Then, punch it up with a pair of bright heels, as in the above look.

#3: Keep pieces sleek. A chic button-down. A pair of tailored pants. Pretty flats. Even the simple shift dress, sleek shirt and structured mini–all your items should be tailored, neat and even a little preppy. This look is all about keeping it pulled together. There’s a certain sass in the colors alone, so keep the rest of your look 100 percent class.
