Do’s and Don’ts: Wearing Neutrals

Hi, my name is Belinda and I am a black-wardrobe-aholic.

As much as I try to break out of my black tee, black cardi and black flats shell, it’s like pulling teeth trying to get me to wear more color. I will admit, however, that I have been on a mission to liven up my wardrobe with a few pops of color here and there. At any rate, whilst my closet is lacking on the Roy G. Biv scale, I don’t always wear black. I like light neutrals as well. Shades of beige, nude, white – I love them all, and for the same reason why I like black so much: They are classic, simple and fuss-free. But there’s more than meets the eye when it comes to neutrals, my friends. To help you master one of the season’s hottest trends, I give to you, the do’s & don’ts of wearing neutrals…

DO: Liven up your neutrals. Neutrals may come off as bland, boring and lifeless, but that’s definitely not the case when you add some “pop” to them. Neutrals set the perfect canvas for bold and colorful accessories, so add some punchy-ness to your muted outfit with a bright belt and colorful handbag.

DON’T: Go for the naked look. The key to wearing neutrals in the nude family is to not create the illusion of actually being nude. From far away, this could be startling for some! Instead, make sure to contrast your nude garments with your skin tone by choosing lighter or darker shades, as well as wearing textured fabrics. Check out our nude fashion shopping guide for some of our top picks.

DO: Color block neutrals. Color-blocking isn’t just for vibrant colors, you know! The combination of contrasting neutrals is chic, sophisticated and a must-try this season. Just as you would with colorful pieces, choose neutral garments in solid shades and keep your color-blocking to no more than three neutrals. Check out this color-blocked dress, it’s gorgeous!

DON’T: Neutral overdose. OK, as much as I’m all for neutrals, I’m also not a fan of an all-washed-out look. Meaning, don’t wear neutral makeup with a neutral outfit. You’ll get lost in the abyss of neutralness! Instead, feel free to get colorful with your lipstick (candy-colored coral, maybe?) and pump up those lashes with some black mascara! Vice versa, if you’re wearing a colorful outfit, go easy on the makeup. Balance. It’s all about balance.
