How to Find Your Style Identity

I see women who are simply frustrated by clothes all the time.

Shopping sort of scares them. They don’t feel a sense of thrill by a new pair of heels or a pretty handbag. And fashion just doesn’t have any luster. To me, this is so sad, because fashion should be fun. But I understand where they’re coming from.

Some people have an innate sense of style that just sort of magically surfaces in their wardrobe choices. They don’t have to work at it–it just simply is. Others have to work a little harder at it, which is totally and 100% fine. And actually, if you look at it in the right light, it’s more exciting to figure out your exact style identity. Don’t know how? It’s pretty simple.

Just look. Observation is the key to finding the sort of style you want to develop for yourself. Pick up a few fashion magazines, and browse online at blogs. Then, clip or print out the images and put them in a book that’s just yours to reference. Finally, sit down and see what you’ve compiled. Start dissecting the gorgeous pieces you’d love to have in your closet.

Let’s say you’re head-over-heels for the aviator frames Rachel Bilson is rocking. Put it on your to-buy list. Let’s say you spot a picture of Reese Witherspoon with rolled boyfriend jeans and flats. Rework your denim by cuffing those hems! See a style blogger with the cutest floral dress? Look for a similar silhouette or print next time you hit the shops. If you take ideas from tons of different sources, you’ll be developing a unique look that’s all your own.

Lastly, when you head out to the stores to pick up your fab finds, make sure to just look around. Don’t think too much, just go where your fashion-cravin’ mind wants you to go. Is that sweater with the sleeve embellishment totally calling your name? Try it on. Never thought you’d pick up a motorcycle jacket, but spot a cropped style that’s pretty darn cute? Pick it up. Think those feather earrings are kind of cool, stop telling yourself you can’t wear a certain trend and grab that adorbs accessory! You can absolutely rock it. Promise.

The hardest thing to overcome when it comes to finding your style? That little voice in your head trying to convince you that certain trends are too out-there. If you like a look, and you’re confident in it, you could wear Lady Gaga’s meat dress circa 2010 and own it. (Well, you know what I mean.)

Great advice! Always look for accessories that can complement your outfit, that’s the final touch to anything you are wearing…some nice and tribal earrings or necklaces can make you look and feel very modern and chic.
