Ask Belinda: How to Wear White Pants

The Question:

Dear Belinda,

I’ve noticed in several fashion magazines and online fashion articles talking about how white is a hot trend for spring. I’ve seen lots of great styles in white but there is one that I’m a little nervous to try: white pants. What are some tips for wearing white pants and not making a fashion faux-pas?

Sincerely,

Kayla

Belinda Says…

Hi Kayla,

There’s definitely a white hot trend going on right now and if there is a great time to wear white, it’s now! The warmer months of spring and summer call upon lighter, cooler fabrics so it’s no wonder white is a staple color for these seasons. The spring 2011 runways brought us an array of bold and bright colors, but they also brought us a crisp palette of whites. In order for you to tread the white pant trend freely and confidently, I’ve outlined the following tips.

Cover up. The first and most important thing about wearing white pants is what you wear beneath them. Logic might trick us into believing that white panties go with white pants, but that’s a definite no-no. Be sure to select a pair of knickers that are nude – very close to your skin tone – and do not create a visible panty line. Quick tip: Try on white pants in natural light to ensure you’re covered up properly.

Size up. White pants come in many styles including wide leg and skinny but, depending on the style and fit, you may want to go a size up. Form-fitting white pants tend to show more – ahem - details than you’d probably like, so opting for a size that’s not as snug is recommended.

Color it up. While white for spring is terrific, too much of it can look a bit sterile. Add some punch to your ensemble with a few colorful accessories and jewelry for a fresh look. White sets the perfect canvas for bright colors, so if you have white pants and a white top on, off-set your look with a colorful belt, handbag and shoes.

Mix it up. Another great way to offset bright solid white is by mixing it with other white pieces in different shades. This is right on trend with the neutral trend and combining ivory, cream, off-white and pure white in just the right way looks ultra chic. You can also take things down a notch by mixing in different shades of nude, as well as wearing nude heels or sandals.

Switch it up. There is a time and place for everything. This rule certainly applies when picking out a white pair of pants. Depending on where you are going, you’ll want to choose a pair of pants in the right fabric. If you’re heading beachside, linen pants are ideal. Spending a day in the city? Go for a thicker fabric like cotton/denim.

Keeping these tips in mind will have you en route to rocking a hot white pair of pants, Kayla. The first step in getting there is just trying a pair on. Try on several pairs until you find the one that fits comfortably and makes you feel comfortable wearing them. Then, add some great heels and accessories for a chic and mastered look. Happy stylin’!

All the best,

Belinda
