While we’ve gotten some warm and sunny days in Southern California the last couple of weeks, we’ve also gotten some sporadic gloomy, rainy days. Today is one of those days. Sigh. So I sit and hope that the sunshine will come back soon but, moving on…Now, while spring frocks and sandals may not be the best choice for this kind of weather, you can still brave the chilly days in style with one of the season’s essentials: outerwear. To keep in line with spring’s airiness and fresh character, I’ve chosen three must-have spring outwear pieces to wear this weekend – and beyond!
Unlike its wool coat counterpart, the military anorak is a lighter, more versatile piece that’s perfect for chilly spring days. I like wearing mine with a nautical stripe top, dark wash skinny jeans (I’m a fan), tall brown boots and my aviator shades. I don’t know what it is about that ensemble, but I feel so cool and in command when I wear it. However, the anorak is also a great way to add some edge to a simple frock. Cinch a belt around your waist, slip into some ankle booties and you’re good to go! On a casual, sunnier day, pair your military anorak with some cuffed denim shorts, a comfortable white tee and a pair of lace-up boots.
Stripes are timeless and classic, but there is no better time to show your stripes than in spring and summer. This season, striped blazers are making waves and are the perfect alternative to drab, fall and winter blazers. Double breasted blazers should be buttoned up for the best look, while single breasted blazer can be worn open or buttoned. Striped blazers will become the focal piece of your outfit, so keep the rest of your ensemble and accessories basic. Dark skinny pants (or jeans), pump heels and a scoop neck tank look great with a striped blazer, or add some pop with a solid bold dress.
It’s back to school time! Ok, maybe not. However, the school trend is back – with varsity jackets at the top of the class. The preppy look is having a moment and depending on your mood, you can play any part you want. Oxford lace-ups and wayfarer shades will be your varsity jacket’s best friends and, when combined with a pleated skirt, you’ll be on your way to Prom Queendom. Feeling sporty? switch the oxfords and skirt for a pair of high-top kicks and cuffed shorts. Varsity jackets aren’t limited to preppy school styles, however; a fitted pair of pants/jeans and pumps will give the jacket some grown up polish.
While my military anorak is my go-to coat for breezy days, I’m looking forward to freshening up my wardrobe with a striped blazer and varsity jacket. Which of these styles do you like best? Share your thoughts in the comments section below!
