Ask Belinda: Kentucky Derby Style

The Question:

Dear Belinda,

I’ve been invited to the Kentucky Derby this year by some distant relatives and, while I have never been (to the races or Kentucky), I understand that the dress code can be pretty strict. I’ve seen pictures of the ladies who attend, all wearing dresses and large hats, but I’m not sure I can pull off the look. I know it’s all about having a good time, but how do I dress for the occasion without sticking out like a sore thumb?

Thanks,

Kentucky Derby Clueless

Belinda Says…

Hi K.D.C.,

First of all, let me tell you how jealous I am (in a lighthearted way, of course)! For the last couple of years I’ve been secretly obsessed with horse race fashion – from the Kentucky Derby to the Royal Ascot races! So, now that I’ve confessed my little secret, I am more than happy to help you put together an outfit! Since a day at Churchill Downs is all about dressing to impress, I’ve outlined the 3 basic elements of dressing for the occasion and how to master the look.

The Hat

The most quintessential accessory of the Kentucky Derby is the hat. Typically, a big and lavish headpiece is the traditional go-to for women, as this is the pièce de résistence of any outfit. Wide brims are the norm, however, you can opt for a smaller hat if you’re not comfortable with a sizable headpiece.  Cloche hats are just as fashionable and perfect for the races. Other small and stylish alternatives would be birdcage headpieces or flower hair clips.

The Dress

Guideline: The more elaborate the hat, the simpler the dress. Pastels are the traditional color palette of Derby fashion, however it’s also common to see bold separates and dresses. A classic sheath dress is perfect for the occasion but, you can steal the show in a punchy solid dress. Lastly, the black and white color combination is timeless and a favorite at the Kentucky Derby (make sure you hat matches!).

The Shoes

Again, the key is to balance your ensemble. The more elaborate your hat, the simpler everything else should be, including your shoes. Chances are you may be walking around mingling with the crowds, so you want to make sure that your heels are comfortable before anything else. Nude pumps are having a major moment, not to mention they lend your legs a slimmer, elongated appearance, and are perfect for a pastel color palette.

I’m sure your day (or weekend) at Churchill Downs will be spectacular. It will be the perfect occasion to play dress up and make new acquaintances. Don’t forget to enjoy a mint julep – or two (one for me, please!) – and take lots of pictures (you might see a few celebs)! As always, happy stylin’!

All the best,

Belinda

  1. I used to live in Kentucky and had to laugh at your comment about the dress code. You haven’t been or seen photos of the in-field where it’s basically topless with beads. But people do dress nice for the expensive seats. Just put on your blinders if you walk past the in-field on your way to the higher class area.

Hello! I’m from Louisville, and I’m a regular derby goer. Haha, I’m big on the fascinator, sun dress, and heels combo myself!

Any way, this girl in this picture… she and I are legit one another’s dopple gangers! Who is she?

    Many thanks!
